Journal after5's Journal: You don't have to go home. [updated] 6

Welcome back for another segment. This time I have a special treat for you. A somewhat pictoral tour of my campus! Yes, that's right, you will be able to see where I live, work, and occasionally play.

Follow this link and you'll find a cute map that you can click on to view over a dozen pictures from around my campus. Nothing too special, just something I whipped up this afternoon.

Briefly, I live off of the Pump Quad (aka Red Square). In one of the oldest buildings on campus, dating back to our days as Gloucester College (monastery really) from medieval times.

I attend lecture in the Linbury Building.
The main quad has 13th century grass, as such, we are not allowed to walk on it.

Oh, and one of the rooms above the pump quad is haunted. Just FYI.

Everything else is essentially self-explanatory. The eastern end of campus is where Craig, Wes, and Aneet live. The rest of us are in Red Square. (named so due to it is filled with people from the Mocbva trip)

And no, mother, I am not going to steal shrubbery/trees/rocks or any other decorative item for use in our backyard. The groundskeepers are quite nice but they are rather big and I don't want to upset them.

Oh yes, I neglected to mention that i was attacked by a fowl creature today. A bird flew into my room and had to be creatively chased out. It was quite confused that the ceiling was not 10,000 feet up. It was a most amusing experience.

Now with even more pictures!

  • I must say I really liked the picture tour. It is so beautiful and green there. I guess that is because it rains a lot and things tend to get green with the rain. A couple of questions though. Is it just you who isn't allowed to walk on the grass or the whole universe minus the groundskeepers? And the picture with the kegs...please tell me you had no part in drinking them. And if you did, tell me if you liked the beer. Well this weekend while you are frolicking about England, I will be frolicking in bubbles at the Masquerade for their Freaky Foam night. Don't worry, COS will be with me, so I won't get into too much trouble. Love you, you big geek!
    • No one, aside from the obvious groundskeepers, is allowed to walk on the grass. David, head of security and such, joked with us about the grass being from the 13th century and as such, difficult to replace, but they just like to have that little area looking rather proper.

Nope, had nothing to do with the emptying of the kegs. Although i did sample a cider, it was reasonably tasty. I will have to say that water is still by beverage of choice.

And having COS by your side does not really imply "safety." But have fun anyway.
  • Jason, very cool. I'm going to show some of my family this photo-tour thing! Staircase 24 never looked better.. I didn't know the pump quad was named "Red Square" that to me reeks of creativity. To answer the not walking on the grass question I saw, we can walk on all the grass (we're not encouraged to) but we Can't walk on the square grass in the Main Quad. I think it's just b/c it looks too good!
Yesterday, someone let a basketball loose, and it fell onto the main quad grass..! It was so funny b/c it was only about 6 feets from the perimeter, but everyone was so scared to walk onto it and get it.. so someone found a long rake and fished it off! :o)
  • Gosh, I sure feel great that I sent my son over to merry ol' England to view the location where the Saint (Kilmer's) was made....this just makes me so proud to know that you are putting your geekness to good use....and what about the "Reading at Oxford" stuff...no record of how the "studies" are proceeding forth with? the Ethics classes are challenging, entertaining, a breeze, et al? Ah well, now you can brag that your have many claims to fame entries in your resume of being "on location" for movielands...The Saint at Oxford, Mission Impossible in Budapest, The Goonies in Astoria (that's in Oregon for the rest of you neophites) gosh, is your collar standing up by itself or does it contain starch??? Anyway, thanks again for your journal musings...enjoy and remember to keep the pictures, cards and letters coming..... Love, Hugs, and Kisses, The Papa
  • Jason, I am constantly amazed (or is it spelled "amased") with your "geekness". Placing those peachy keen pictures on the campus map is nifty neato...(am I dating myself???). Anyway, it really looks like a beautiful place to live, play and enjoy....it brings to mind the book I read on the discovery of the DNA module double helix by Dr James Watson who also studied there. Thank you for bringing to life the times and place of your current "studies". And pray tell the picture of the kegs significance...are they stored just off the "Red Square"? Are they representative of that cheap American beer??? Do the English Pubs really keep their ale in aluminum containers???? And remember the story behind the old saying "mind your p's and q's"....keep an eye on the bartender, the waitress (sorry Heidi), and the pound... Love, The Papa
    • The kegs made for an interesting picture, I liked how they looked with regards to the ambiant light and the area in which they were placed, so I thought they'd make a good still life. And it is amusing to me to see so many kegs that have been consumed by, essentially, GT students.

The kegs supply the pub that is located in the pump quad. There used to be a well there many years ago (hence the name, Pump Quad) but now only the pub exists to provide for the students of Worcester. Allegedly we also have a Worcester label wine. Yet to actually see it though.

If I have not seen so far it is because I stood in giant's footsteps.

Working...
