Journal after5's Journal: Miracle Three 2

Ah, the glories of cinema. Last night some of the guys and I sat down to watch "The Saint." Most of you remember Roger Moore as the saint but this was the modern "update" of the character played by Val Kilmer. Came out around 1997 I think. Anyway, it's not really that true to the Moore character, but it sufficed for modern audiences.

Although Elizabeth Shue as a nuclear physicist? Please, that's about as believable as "Dr. Christmas Jones" aka Denise Richards playing the nuclear physicist in "The World is Not Enough" opposite Pierce Brosnan.

I think hollywood just hasn't figured out that air-head looking actresses do not equal plausible nuclear physicists.

Moving on--we picked The Saint because it takes place in essentially all the places we have visited. There's Red Square and Moscow in general, then, of course, London, and finally...OXFORD! Yes, that's right, glorious Oxford (although they used University College--Katie Sloop is studying there at the moment--and not Worcester, but it's still Oxford).

It was fun to see the Moscow scenes and go "wait...that building isn't even near Red Square! But he just walked to it in less than a minute!" Or "that's an first year undergrad chem lab, lectures aren't even HELD there."

Another fun thing is that nerds, when presented with a movie that we have all seen, feel the need to debunk or laugh at any outrageous scientific boondoggles. So when the cold fusion parts come up involving pseudo-scientific words all mushed together because they sound cool, yeah, we laugh.

But overall it was a fun little movie to watch and relax with. Just goes to show you that nothing is safe around the geek-kind.

Now if you excuse me, my freshly restrung guitar feels neglected.

  • Sorry, but while I'm glad you enjoyed seeing 'The Saint' in its finished form, those of us that were there when it was being filmed really f**king hate that movie. My college was Hertford, and they decided that the best day to shoot the final sequence in which the guy is wrestled to the ground outside our college (by the Sheldonian and Bodlean, if that helps) was the day we all have to be out of our rooms by 10am. Since they didn't want a bunch of students in shot, we were reduced to sprinting the length of Catte Street between takes carrying all our worldly goods. Not something you want to be doing with heavy record crates and glassware, trust me.

Also, Val Kilmer thought he could make it all better by allowing us to briefly bask in his superstar glory. Tw*t.

Then, when the film was all done, the test audiences thought the ending was crap, so they reshot it. On the last day of the following term, so we had to repeat the process. As you can tell, I've never forgiven them.
    • Yeah, I recall hearing complaints about the movie interrupting the final exams and move out processes.

I was under the impression that the original ending (where Emma dies) was more widely appreciated than the current ending.

      Thanks for the opinion though.
