Canada’s electricity imports (driven largely by hydro provinces like Québec) reached: 23.2 TWh in 2024 (+8% YoY)

Imports have been increasing every year since 2020

In 2024, Québec recorded the biggest year-over-year increase in imports in Canada: +3.9 TWh imported from the U.S.

In 2024, Hydro-Québec bought: ~6 TWh (2024) ~10 TWh (2025) -> That’s a ~66% increase in one year

Québec used to be a major electricity exporter, but in just a few years, exports have dropped by more than half while imports are rising sharply. Hydro-Québec increased its electricity purchases from about 6 TWh to 10 TWh in a single year, and Québec had the largest increase in imports in Canada in 2024. At the same time, Canada’s net electricity exports have collapsed to their lowest level in 20 years. The system is clearly shifting from surplus to pressure.
The problem is that as this happen and progress, we will be bind by legal agreement to supply this province or that state, and we will be fucked.
