Source : Canada Energy Regulator

In 2024, Québec recorded the biggest year-over-year increase in imports in Canada: +3.9 TWh imported from the U.S.
Source : Statistics Canada

In 2024, Hydro-Québec bought: ~6 TWh (2024) ~10 TWh (2025) -> That’s a ~66% increase in one year
Source : Hydro Quebec

Québec used to be a major electricity exporter, but in just a few years, exports have dropped by more than half while imports are rising sharply. Hydro-Québec increased its electricity purchases from about 6 TWh to 10 TWh in a single year, and Québec had the largest increase in imports in Canada in 2024. At the same time, Canada’s net electricity exports have collapsed to their lowest level in 20 years. The system is clearly shifting from surplus to pressure.

The problem is that as this happen and progress, we will be bind by legal agreement to supply this province or that state, and we will be fucked.

Are you kidding me... Hydro Quebec is the worst example of a government owned monopoly.

The fictional goal:

"helps paying the cost of running the government like education, roads and social programs etc. Citizens in Quebec pay around 7 cents a KWh at that's Canadian money where 1 $CAN == 0.70 $US"

The reality:

That money is being wasted by our politicians at the moment, that vote themselve 30% salary increase, wasted around 800M~ in public funds on various prone-to-fail projects, increase the public system instead instead of reducing the presence of the state and the amount of white collar. Additionnally, this year , Hydro got the permission to raise price over the inflation %. Basically it is used as a cash-cow that never cease to funds the ambitions of politicians that want to have big projet to export that energy so they can resell it. The real price of hydro is around 10cent a Khw once you passed the basic level, which correspond to a 1 room appartment, and not a home or a house of a typical family. So after a few day you already exceed the low cost, and start paying the higher price. Hydro is the cash-cow that can employ arrogant social media teams that mock their own customers online when they complain.

As a Quebecer, ***I find this description of Hydro Quebec pretty offensive, delusional at best***. We lost the control over them, and the governement (ab)use em only as a leverage. What we need, is to develop a way to store that energy so that during winters time, we don't need to lurk back to Ontario and the USA and cry for energy that we need to buy back at crazy rate.
