You did not read the article in question. The gun had its firing pin removed or was otherwise modified to not fire. Excerpt from the article:

With the gun still to his head, he starts pulling the trigger incessantly. "I can do this all day long,â he says to the sound of the hammer clicking. âoeI can do this a thousand times. Ten thousand times. Nothing will ever happen. Why? Because you have missed something. You are operating on an assumption about reality that is wrong."

Have you ever taken a certification? My Security+ and CCENT both required that I have state-issued ID (or federal issued) as well as that I had my photo taken at the testing center. When you go to look at my CCENT online they show my photo on the validation page.

Not sure what kind of joke certs you are talking about. These are both pretty basic certifications and they required documentation/validation of identity. Furthermore, the tests are electronic and taken at a certified testing center, and are monitored via video/audio feeds so you can't take a test booklet/sheet out. You obviously don't know what you're talking about.

A close friend does hiring of pen-testers and told me that when he goes to a client with a bill for $100,000 or whatever, the client wants to know that they're getting their money's worth (ie, they want to see security certs).

.

Certifications don't mean anything, but when you're charging clients an arm and a leg, they like to see some credentials.

Seriously: words suck at describing or conveying a lot of things. And half of these comments are just people who don't know how to use a search engine properly. They can't read your minds [yet] and we are using the equivalent of charades to try and explain to a computer what we're looking for.

Until we can directly share a mental image with a computer, we're going to have to deal with crafting search queries.

I'm with you on a lot of this stuff, except for this one which is blatantly false.

"Crime rates have varied over time, with a sharp rise after World War II, before peaking between the 1970s and early 1990s. Since the early 1990s, crime has declined in the United States, and current crime rates are approximately the same as those of the 1960s." (citations in article)

Comment I don't trust non-paid apps (Score 1) 240

I don't trust non-paid apps -- they need to be making some revenue somehow. If they're not charging you, they're still getting something from you. What do you think that something is? At least if I pay for the app I HOPE they aren't selling my data.

And seriously, apps are so cheap. You go out to the bar and have a beer? That's 1-2 apps right there, easily. Except that you lose the beer shortly after drinking, while you get the app forever.
