I live near Lowell, MA and every community around Lowell has FIOS except Lowell. Boston is the same. Those that managed to get FIOS in Boston probably were only able to get it because they near another community where it was rolled out.

Verizon started rolling out FIOS in Massachusetts and did deploy it to a number of communities but then just stopped. I read somewhere that supposedly Verizon decided to switch their concentration away from land connections to rolling out better wireless because they see it as the future. Supposedly, and I have no proof of this other than innuendo, Verizon was using the FIOS roll out as a bargaining chip for spectrum space from Comcast. Whether this is true or not, Comcast did agree to sell spectrum space to Verizon.

Feeling Upset? Look At Some Meat 155

Meshach writes "A study out of Canada claims that seeing meat actually calms a person down. From the article: 'Contrary to expectations, a McGill University researcher has discovered that seeing meat makes people significantly less aggressive. Frank Kachanoff, who studies evolution at the university’s department of psychology, had initially thought the presence of meat would provoke bloodlust, believing the response would have helped our primate ancestors hunt. But in fact, his research showed the reverse is true.'" I can see all the "Make Steak, Not War!" protest signs already.

Immaculate Conception In a Boa Constrictor 478

crudmonkey writes "Researchers have discovered a biological shocker: female boa constrictors are capable of giving birth asexually. But the surprise doesn't end there. The study in Biology Letters found that boa babies produced through this asexual reproduction — also known as parthenogenesis — sport a chromosomal oddity that researchers thought was impossible in reptiles. While researchers admit that the female in the study may have been a genetic freak, they say the findings should press researchers to re-think reptile reproduction. Virgin birth among reptiles, especially primitive ones like boas, they argue may be far commoner than ever expected."

Herschel Spectroscopy of Future Supernova 21

davecl writes "ESA's Herschel Space Telescope has released its first spectroscopic results. These include observations of VYCMa, a star 50 times as massive as the sun and soon to become a supernova, as well as a nearby galaxy, more distant colliding starburst galaxies and a comet in our own solar system. The spectra show more lines than have ever been seen in these objects in the far-infrared and will allow astronomers to work out the detailed chemistry and physics behind star and planet formation as well as the last stages of stellar evolution before VYCMa's eventual collapse into a supernova. More coverage is available at the Herschel Mission Blog, which I run."

As an employee of the 107 location in Salem, NH I am happy. I am so sick of this place. I hate being forced to shove a warranty down a customer's throat. I'm now stuck with finding a new job, but it can't be any worse than CompUSA.
