Definitely use EC2. There is no point in owning hardware anymore unless you have a poor Internet connection or you're running a local application like a media server. Of course, this is above and beyond a reasonable desktop/laptop which you'll need for local development, management etc... I personally use and love Macs (switched about a year ago). I wouldn't go back to Windows for $1k (and I used to be a Windows Server Admin - actually, their server stuff is good). When you're on Mac, you'll need a good package manager. I recommend MacPorts and Porticus. As for which Mac, get the iMac or MacBook with an external monitor, mouse, and keyboard. Buy TextMate also for editing.

Google Assists In Arrest Of Indian Man 609

An anonymous reader writes "After a Google user posted a profane picture of the Hindu saint Shivaji, Indian authorities contacted Google to ask for his IP address. Google complied. He was arrested and is reported to have been beaten by a lathi and asked to use the same bowl to eat and to use in the toilet. Not surprisingly, Google is a keen to play this down as Yahoo is being hauled over the coals by US Congress for handing over IP addresses and emails to the Chinese Government which resulted in a Chinese democracy activist being jailed." Readers are noting that these are 2 unrelated cases — the latter is several months old.

Submission + - Who is the best candidate for technology?

Petey_Alchemist writes: With Super Tuesday coming up and the political field somewhat winnowed down, the process of picking the nominees for the next American President is well underway. At the same time, the Internet is bustling through a period of legal questions. Copyright infringement, net neutrality, wireless spectrums, content filtering, broadband deployment: all of these are just a few of the host of issues that the next President will be pressured to weigh in on during his or her tenure.

Now I understand that Slashdot, like most engineers I know, probably prefers a "hands-off" government approach when it comes to technology in general and the Internet in particular.

With that in mind, who do you think would be the best (or worst) candidate on Internet issues?
