No, I don't have to. Doing something because I want to do it is not the same as doing something because someone else wants me to do it, even if I occasionally end up doing the exact same thing. What people who are not open source developers need to understand is that they are not customers. They cannot get their money back. They can ask for something, nicely, but not demand. Getting a gift does not imply a right to more gifts. They can not threaten and they can not harass. Every open source developer knows the type, and just because that's the world we live in doesn't make it right. Everybody's limit for taking this shit is different, but there is always a limit.

The expectation is to not get shat on for providing a free service to the community. If that is not possible, because the internet, then there should be at least some recognition of practical authority. You do not get to stand by the sidelines, watching other people do the work, and then endlessly complain that you don't get your way. That's not an ego thing. If too much power is taken away from the people who do the actual work, then they will throw in the towel at some point. It's not a democracy when ten people decide what some guy has to give them for free.
