Comment Re:VR IS AWESOME (Score 1) 77

I have a PSVR as well, and Resident Evil 7, and I tell you it is awesome. Are the graphics not quite as good as on the TV? Sure - especially since I only have the PS4 and not the PS4 Pro. (supposedly the PS4 Pro makes a difference with the graphics in RE7 - https://gamerant.com/resident-...). But regardless, the game is so immersive with VR that you almost feel lost in it. I find myself crouching and peeking around a corner to see if an enemy is there. With the 3D sound coming to the headphones, it sounds like you're there as well. I echo the sentiments on the Battlefront VR mission as well - my first time through I said "woah!" several times, and looked out the right side of my cockpit as my craft circled a star destroyer - I mean, truly amazing. I think the other challenge with VR is that some people just cannot play for extended periods of time - I don't have that problem; I played RE7 for several hours the other night (in fact I was shocked at the time when I finally disconnected - you lose time when you're in!) Finally, there is some inconvenience with plugging in the headset, and even wearing the headset (sheesh I look ridiculous!), but that's the price to play. All of these issues will lessen over time - graphics will get better, the headset will give you a better field of view, the headsets will be wireless, the headsets will morph into a direct neural link (ok, maybe that's a stretch), but this is the wave of the future.

Comment Spotify w/ offline play, Echo integration (Score 1) 316

I use Spotify all the time! In my car I have an ipod touch that syncs with my wifi when the car is in the garage. It's set to play music offline, so I can add music to my library from any Spotify client, and voila - it's in my car the next day. (my car is a bit older, w/o bluetooth, and I had to get an ipod dock installed so I can control from my steering wheel). In the house, I have an Amazon Echo in the living room and a Dot in the bedroom. Both will play with either voice control or you can remotely control Spotify from a tablet or other client. There's also a Spotify client on the PS4, so I can listen to music while playing Doom. The catalog is great as well; I can almost always find what interests me.

I agree - it is wishful thinking, considering the learned helplessness that has come with consumerism in the tech age. First-day updates? Yup, that'll happen, we say with a shrug. Hey, my tablet won't turn on. Maybe it'll work later. We say with a shrug. There's a bug in Ubuntu that won't let me update from 14.04 to 16.04? Ok, we say. With a shrug. And I assume we all have experienced the hell of trying to troubleshoot an issue with tech support. My Droid Turbo keeps turning the wifi back on, even when I turn it off. Motorola's answer is to reset the phone, thereby making me waste my time on a fix that most likely comes from a script. (I suspect that it's something Verizon had them do, to reduce data usage). And woe be unto anyone who attempts to call tech support for a product that involves other systems - Netflix on Xbox, for example, on wifi connecting to a home router...oh boy - you'll spend at least an hour or two on that call, unless it's a quick fix. If they can't fix it, then it's a problem with the console, or the wifi...they just can't be sure... I claim that the answer is public shame. We need to start posting videos of our software and hardware Just Not Working. The companies will not respond to our calls and emails with any urgency - to them it's just a numbers problem. But they will respond to videos of their junky stuff on the internet. And hey, we're not going to get every tech company to jump into the high-quality pool all at once, but we can certainly nudge them to quit with this bullsh*t. If you have a link to a video of buggy software or hardware, send it to abramn[at]humanobstaclecourse.com. The blog has been a bit neglected as of late, but I promise I will consolidate and post every single appropriate video sent!

Comment appearances matter (Score 1) 546

As someone who worked as a software developer before and after I got my degree, I can tell you that the degree matters. I experienced a 50%!!! increase in salary after I got my BS in CIS. I got my last two jobs after I received my diploma, and both employers looked at my education during the background check. I agree that it shouldn't matter, but unless you have a killer app on the android store, or some other tangible piece of evidence of your coding prowess, the employer is going to want to see the degree.

Comment why believe what the govt says (Score 1) 306

Seriously - whatever the government's reaction to the public outcry against the NSA spying, why should we as the public believe it? The only thing we should believe is laws and regulations that contain a clear path for recourse should those laws be broken. The US government can, and will, spin any negative press in their favor. They will lie to us, and then lie about lying to us. And why wouldn't they? If you were the one in power, and your subjects could do very little to stop you from acting in your own best interests, wouldn't you (almost) do whatever you wanted? Maybe a better way to put it is that the United States is a country of "the ends justify the means," and the means can be whatever, as long as they're reported in such a way that polling shows that most Americans would favor the decision.

Duke Nukem 3D On Unreal Engine 3 118

Julefrokost writes "While we're waiting patiently on Forever, there's some real news in the Duke Nukem realm. Ars Technica has a story about a fan-made Duke 3D project on Unreal Engine 3. There's an awesome demo video up on YouTube. Created by hardcore fan Frederick 'fresch' Schreiber, we can hopefully expect to see an upgraded Duke 3D in the near future." The article also notes, "Gearbox ultimately decided to support the project, and gave Schreiber a personal, non-commercial license to Duke Nukem 3D. He can't sell the work or profit from it directly, but he can use the characters and design of the game without fear of being shut down."

Dogs Can Be Pessimistic 99

Not that it will change anything, but researchers at Bristol University say that your dog might be a gloom-monger. In addition to the downer dogs, the study also found a few that seemed happy no matter how uncaring the world around them was. "We know that people's emotional states affect their judgments and that happy people are more likely to judge an ambiguous situation positively. What our study has shown is that this applies similarly to dogs," said professor Mike Mendl, an author of the study and head of animal welfare and behavior at Bristol University.

Two Unpatched Flaws Show Up In Apple iOS 171

Trailrunner7 writes "The technique that the Jailbreakme.com Web site is using to bypass the iPhone's security mechanisms and enable users to run unapproved apps on their phones involves exploiting two separate vulnerabilities. One of the vulnerabilities is a memory-corruption flaw that affects the way that Apple's mobile devices, including the iPad and iPod Touch, display PDFs. The second weakness is a problem in the Apple iOS kernel that gives an attacker higher privileges once his code is on a targeted device, enabling him to break out of the iOS sandbox. The combination of the two vulnerabilities — both of which are unpatched at the moment — gives an attacker the ability to run remote code on the device and evade the security protections on the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. The technique became public earlier this week when the Jailbreakme.com site began hosting a set of specially crafted PDF files designed to help users jailbreak their Apple devices and load apps other than the ones approved by Apple and offered in its official App Store."

Research I did before selecting this school: Does the diploma have "online" written on it ANYWHERE. (no) Is the school ranked? In this case, FIT is ranked by US News and World Report - not the highest but not the lowest either. It also did pretty well on the ROI report published by Business Week: http://www.businessweek.com/interactive_reports/bs_collegeROI_0621.html?chan=bschools_special+report+--+buyer+beware_college+degree:+buyer+beware. Did the college start off with a physical campus, and then add the online extension later? (yes) What you want is a school that offers an online degree in order to attract students from across the country, and not because they can't afford an actual campus.
