Comment I'll buy my next smart watch when someone makes it (Score 1) 331

I kickstarted the Pebble (grey). It wasn't bad at all, though getting it took a while. AndroidWear looked awesome to me. I ordered a Moto 360 the day they became available to order, and then I wore it until its battery gave out nearly two years later. At that point, I was all set to order a 3rd generation Moto 360, but Motorola cancelled it. I was eager for what became the LG Watch Sport when it was a rumored Google release, but the thing was huge. Every so often I look at what is available, but nothing calls to me like the Moto 360 did.

Meanwhile, my first smartwatch, an old Ironman Datalink, keeps chugging along.

Miyamoto Steps Down As Nintendo Game Design Head 112

RobinEggs writes "Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator and producer of the Zelda and Mario franchises among other works, is stepping down at Nintendo. After personally managing Nintendo's blockbuster franchises for ~20 years, Miyamoto said today: 'What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself. Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.'" Update: 12/08 21:35 GMT by T : Note that Nintendo is careful to say that this is not retirement, even if Miyamoto's role at Nintendo changes.

Submission + - Plumber Injection Attack in Bowser’s Castle (ksplice.com) 1

An anonymous reader writes: Security Advisory SMB-1985-0001: Plumber Injection Attack in Bowser’s Castle

Ksplice, working in conjunction with Lakitu Cloud Security, has released a high-severity advisory about a Plumber Injection attack in multiple versions of Bowser's Castle. An Italian plumber could exploit this bug to bypass security measures (walk through walls) in order to rescue Peach, to defeat Bowser, or for unspecified other impact.

This vulnerability is demonstrated by "happylee-supermariobros,warped.fm2". Attacks using this exploit have been observed in the wild, and multiple other exploits are publicly available. A patch has been made available.

Submission + - HP Donates to WebOS's Major Hombrewing Group (precentral.net) 2

Kilrah_il writes: WebOS Internals Group is the central repository for all the homebrewing done on the WebOS platform, including apps, patches and kernels. Recently it became clear that server infrastructure would fall behind future progress in the WebOS world. "So they asked HP's Phil McKinney, who has arranged to donate an HP Proliant DL385 2u server with 32 gigs of RAM and 8 terabytes of disk space... Notably, this is a straight-up donation, no strings attached — so WebOS Internals will remain how they always have: completely independent from the company whose OS they hack on."

Submission + - Simpler "Hello World" demonstrated in C (ksplice.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Wondering where all that bloat comes from so even the classic "Hello world" now takes 11k? An MIT programmer decided to make a Linux C program so simple, she could explain every byte of the assembly. She found gcc was including libc even when you don't ask for it, and shows how to compile a much simpler "Hello world" — using no libraries at all. This takes me back to the days of programming bare-metal on DOS!

A Hyper-Velocity Impact In the Asteroid Belt? 114

astroengine writes "Astronomers have spotted something rather odd in the asteroid belt. It looks like a comet, but it's got a circular orbit, similar to an asteroid. Whether it's an asteroid or a comet, it has a long, comet-like tail, suggesting something is being vented into space. Some experts think it could be a very rare comet/asteroid hybrid being heated by the sun, but there's an even more exciting possibility: It could be the first ever observation of two asteroids colliding in the asteroid belt."

Police Called Over 11-Year-Old's Science Project 687

garg0yle writes "Police in San Diego were called to investigate an 11-year-old's science project, consisting of 'a motion detector made out of an empty Gatorade bottle and some electronics,' after the vice-principal came to the conclusion that it was a bomb. Charges aren't being laid against the youth, but it's being recommended that he and his family 'get counseling.' Apparently, the student violated school policies — I'm assuming these are policies against having any kind of independent thought?"

First thing is that they did not need to test "everything" to get it started. When you have 450 GeV protons in the ring, you dont need 7-8 Tesla magnetic field... So they got it started because they could and decided that they can test the high magnetic field setting later.
Second: The incident happened as they *were* testing it in a break from the low energy collisions schedule.
Third: It was more like 6 tons of helium...

But OK, you've got most of the story right.

Russia's New Official Holiday — Programmer's Day 306

Glyn Moody writes "Russia's president, Dmitry Medvedev, has decreed a new holiday for his country: Programmer's Day. Appropriately enough, it will be celebrated on the 256th day of the year: September 13th (September 12th for a leap year). Do programmers deserve their own holiday ahead of other professions? Should the rest of the world follow suit?"

Yes. It is used here as a unit of energy that *one* particle carries. Take a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electron_volt The proton weighs 1GeV. 7TeV (Terra electron volts) which the LHC should run at, means that a poor proton will be so energetic that it will have 7000 times the energy that is it's mass. The higher energy a particle, the higher the magnetic field needs to be to curve it around the 27km ring. If the magnets can not handle the design current than that limits the magnetic field, which in turn limits the energy of the particles that you can accelerate. Incidentally, a 7TeV proton has about the same kinetic energy as a mosquito. But imagine that all the energy is being carried by *one* proton. Now, there are 100 billion protons in a beam bunch and 2000 of these bunches running around the LHC, according to the design and in the end, the total kinetic energy comes close to that of an aircraft carrier going at some reasonable speed, I am told... ps.
