Microsoft wants to move users away from older versions of support (understandable) and get everyone on the Apple style platform. Because Microsoft does not sell the hardware (see Apple comment) they cannot make back the money on the software by giving it away for free.. Subscriptions are coming and are coming to stay. All hardware makers and software makers wants this. Because in the end I can make sure that most everyone will run the latest versions of software.
