Comment Obvious explanation: encryption (Score 4, Informative) 251

I can't believe that in all those comments nobody mentioned the most likely reason for those numbers:
Encryption.

Most of the P2P traffic will be Bittorrent. All popular bittorrent clients allow to use encryption and random ports to prevent traffic shaping. Encrypted torrent traffic can - to my knowledge - not be detected by the ISP and is most likely counted as normal traffic in the mentioned numbers.

Maybe encryption is not very mainstream yet but the hardcore users will always enabled it (even when their own connection is not limited) because it will result in better speeds. So every encrypted gigabyte they used to download normally affects the numbers twice: it's one less gigabyte of counted P2P traffic and one more gigabyte of counted normal traffic.

On a sitenote: this is also the solution for those affected by traffic shaping: tell you torrent client to encrypt the traffic at all times and watch your speed go up.

I don't know why this flamebait got modded up but I'll bite anyways:

* Spend $200+ on Windows 7 (Netbook Version)
A systembuilder license of Vista Home Premium is about 70 Euro (90$) today. I see no reason why Windows 7 won't cost around the same. Besides, most people buy the OS with their machine.

* Spend $40-60 on antivirus.
Again - this is clearly a troll/fanboy argument. You realize that there's perfectly good antivirus solutions for free (AVG, Avast, Antivir)?

* Spend $200 on Office
You realize that you can install OpenOffice on windows as well?

* Limited to three applications.
See above, you'll likely get the normal Windows 7 Home version a lot cheaper than the rumored suggested retail prices floating around these days.

As a rule of thumb: if you're biased (as you clearly are) and trying to make a comparison, put extra effort into making it a fair one. Otherwise you'll just look like the fanboy/troll that you are.

I agree, Tomato is a great firmware. Two important tips: 1) Do NOT set any of the "Prioritize small packets with these control flags" boxes. If a high/full speed torrent runs it will have a lot of those packets and it will kill any potential benefit of the QOS. 2) After trying Tomato, if you want to get even more speed out of your router try the speedmod: http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2008/04/linksys-wrt54gl-routers-improving.html More details there. PS: DD-WRT works fine too but the GUI of Tomato is so slick and user friendly that I don't want to miss it anymore.
