Comment The necessity of AWS and centralized systems. (Score 1) 61

Companies like Signal relying on "The Cloud" says a lot about a company who's main product is technology. This is a question of Opex vs Capex where Opex wins. When Signal were starting out and had just created the app, I 100% agree that AWS might have been a good platform to get the company started. As soon as you were established (as you have been for years now), the move /should/ have been to in-house this. This is your main product, why would you rely on a vendor for your entire sustainability? You'd put a second internet connection into your company for up-time, but not consider AWS as the backup to your in-house infrastructure, instead of the other way around. They sold you the dependency, you bought it. A lot of bean counters did. Saying you can't do this is utter crap and anyone in your company claiming it's not possible should be fired. To include you Chief. If your claim is that you're bound by Amazon's servers, then you are not fit for the job. You're not the right person to control the company. If your intent is to make money, continue to rely on Amazon. If your goal is to provide a good product to your clients/customers, in-house the infrastructure.
