At least in Britain they have to make an attempt to change history. Here in the U.S.A. our attention spans are so short that it doesn't matter what stupid, appalling, ridiculous thing any politician says it will be forgotten by the masses and largely ignored by the media shortly after it comes out. If it's not making the media money, or if it's not a video news clip, or something with small, simple words thats no bigger than a postage stamp to read, no one will even know it ever existed.

Oh my! How dare other countries threaten our values and beliefs that we can have state and federally sanctioned killings! Who do these other people think they are from the...EU...wherever that is, imparting their beliefs on us? We are the United States of America and we say how it is not the other way around. If they actually carry this through we may have to compromise...we may have to revisit our own values. Dear God we may have to sit and think for a minute about the fact that we live in a pluralist society and that things cant always be black and white and exactly the way we want it....and dear God they may not let us just simply ignore their wishes this time..........nah.

Why can't Verizon just say "No". This is a huge company, tens of thousands of employees? Multi-million dollar if not billion dollar company? Hell, many government employees use Verizon phones and their network. This, to me, is a case of the idiot poking the lion with a stick. I bet if Verizon wanted to they could really stand up for the peple here. I for one would support them. Enough is enough, when I was a kid I was taught that the great thing about this nation was that we could think freely and say what we wanted and never have to fear persecution for that. Now I find myself thinking about whether or not I can even post my dumb opinion on /. without sending up a red flag. It would be a battle but if the big companies like Verizon said no to things like this and we stood by them maybe we could start taking our country back. Honestly think about the ramifications of Verizon saying "No". A fine, I am sure they could pay. Shutting down the whole network and putting that many tax paying Americans out of work? Arresting people? Who and how, I mean these are powerful and rich people and those people do t go to jail. Heck they could probably just up and leave anyways. Well, to me it just seems like it could be possible. I know I am being naive but I wish it was the world we lived in.

Go to the fucking library! Its a resource you're already paying for and nowadays they have other perks too.

Dear sexy_flying_yoda, First of all I think it is wonderful to have another math major falling to the dark side. But in answer to your question I have one recommendation for you to start with, Physics for Scientists and Engineers by Serway. It is bit expensive but depending on the university you go to there is a good chance it will have been the intro course book used there. It covers pretty much every topic from vectors to QM (although briefly) but it can help in getting you up to speed. If you start reading now before summer is over then you can jump into the straight E&M and QM texts that will be useful for your courses. With the basics under your belt (assuming you are shaky in them) you should be well prepared by the time classes begin. I have read several comments by others and I have to say that there are a lot of good recommendations being made to you but if you are just starting in Physics this is a good book to have, if only for reference.
