Students Calculate What Hyperspace Travel Would Actually Look Like 234

cylonlover writes "The two Star franchises (Wars and Trek) and countless science fiction movies have given generations of armchair space travelers an idea of what to expect when looking out the window of a spaceship that's traveling faster than the speed of light. But it appears these views are – if you'll excuse the pun – a bit warped. Four students from the University of Leicester have used Einstein's theory of Special Relativity to calculate what faster than light travel would actually look like to Han and Chewie at the controls of the Millennium Falcon. The fourth year physics students – Riley Connors, Katie Dexter, Joshua Argyle, and Cameron Scoular – say that the crew wouldn't see star lines (PDF) stretching out past the ship during the jump to hyperspace, but would actually see a central disc of bright light."

I half want Samsung to develop a round screen, and for it to be a huge success, and for Apple to try to compete with it - just to see what they try to do. Just a shame a round device would be a right PITA to carry around, and an even more PITA to develop for.

Hmm a hand held, touch controlled computing device in a circular format... prior art? http://retrocalculators.com/abacus_files/Round_Bagua_Chinese_Abacus_Circular_Suanpan_ChinaDaily.jpg

Unlike M$ who just tell you that the latest update means your printer's driver isn't supported any more, go buy a diffrent printer instead.

Using your logic, you can also use VLC on Linux, your point?

Submission + - Proposed UK Online Libel Rules Would Restrict Anom (eweekeurope.co.uk)

judgecorp writes: "A Parliamentary Committee in the UK has suggested that sites should be protected against libel claims against contributors — as long as those contributors are identified. Anonymous postings should be taken down if someone complains of libel in them, in a set of proposals which online community groups have described as "chilling"."

Submission + - Android 4.0 Source Code Coming 'Soon' (itworld.com)

itwbennett writes: "Good news today for those of you who have been waiting for news about whether Google would be opening up the ICS source and for those of you who thought it was gone for good. Android engineer Dan Morrill revealed new information in the Android Building Google group yesterday evening, saying that Google plans 'to release the source for the recently-announced Ice Cream Sandwich soon, once it's available on devices.'"

On-Screen Keyboard Maliit Demoed With Gnome 3 66

Developer Jon Nordby has posted a video demo of the on-screen keyboard Maliit — intended "to be the input method project for MeeGo and other GNU/Linux-based embedded/mobile platforms" — working on a tablet running Gnome 3 under Fedora. Nordby mentions that Fedora packages are in the works for those who'd like to try it out. The keyboard looks impressively smooth and flexible (including language-specific character sets); I only wish it had the smooth-swiping predictive ability of keyboards like Swype.
