Submission + - First Picture of Planet Orbiting Sunlike Star? (bbc.co.uk) 1

DigitumDei writes: "It appears scientists may have obtained the first ever image of a planet orbiting a sun like star.
From the article:
The planet itself lies out at a great distance from its parent star: about 330 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun. By comparison, the most distant planet in our Solar System, Neptune, orbits at about 30 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun.
Dr Matt Burleigh, from the University of Leicester, UK, commented: "This is a very good candidate for a first picture of a planet orbiting a normal star."

The Century's Top Engineering Challenges 290

coondoggie writes "The National Science Foundation announced today 14 grand engineering challenges for the 21st century that, if met, would greatly improve how we live. The final choices fall into four themes that are essential for humanity to flourish — sustainability, health, reducing vulnerability, and joy of living. The committee did not attempt to include every important challenge, nor did it endorse particular approaches to meeting those selected. Rather than focusing on predictions or gee-whiz gadgets, the goal was to identify what needs to be done to help people and the planet thrive, the group said. A diverse committee of engineers and scientists — including Larry Page, Robert Langer, and Robert Socolow — came up with the list but did not rank the challenges. Rather, the National Academy of Engineering is offering the public an opportunity to vote on which one they think is most important."

If you know what you're doing, your experience is not "irrelevant anecdotal evidence", it's "expert testimony". But since you seem to discount both broad studies and individual experience equally, one wonders what you base your judgements on.

Perhaps something truly unbiased -- say, a coin flip?

User Journal

Journal Journal: Hmm I knew it!

Well I knew it... I was going to stop using this journal almost the moment I started.

Well a few months down the line and I'm a whole lot more competitent in Linux. Of course having my main winXP box stolen out my house and having to wait a month before getting a replacement certainly helped. Nothing like having no options to force one to learn stuff.
Linux

Journal Journal: What a pain

Well, despite the fact that this linux box is going to be used mostly as a media player, there are times that work will need to be done on it.

Its low on memory, so I need a lean WM.

So, I decided to install samba and xfce. samba to allow the box to connect to my XP box's shares and of course xfce as the lean mean fast WM.
Linux

Journal Journal: Me n00b, you linux!

Well I figure if I'm ever going to use this journal, documenting my experiences with Linux would be about the most appropriate thing to put here.

I am a linux newbie. I know nothing. But to start lets put a bit of background info about my computing experience.

I started on a ZX Spectrum 48k as a kid. Programmed it bit, mostly copying out of one of those code your own game books and then modifying slightly.
