Great point. We should probably stop any and all science that doesn't have direct, actionable results. Like stop sending robots to the bottom of the ocean. It's not like we'll ever move down there...

The idea that Linux is even "pretty close" is ludicrous. Having menus and close-window widgets don't even get you in the ball park IMO.
What about MacOS X? Why is the Linux community so hung up on duplicating/beating MS? With its UNIX core, many Mac programs would be easy ports to Linux except for the windowing API. Is there any effort to create an open source implementation of the Mac OS X windowing API?
