My daughter's school uses this system, it's not a full 'proper criminal' fingerprint, they use the side of their index finger, it is sufficient to pay for things in the canteen, but is in no way an invasion of privacy or 'pre-criminalising' the students.

Early product specs confirm that the second wave of netbooks are likely to offer faster graphics and lower power use, along with room for much, much larger batteries. The N280 apparently integrates the northbridge and CPU, meaning that the GPU moves to 45nm process technology, the FSB gets replaced by an on-chip interconnect, and overall board real-estate drops to a third of what it was previously — hence the ability to stuff an 8,700mAh battery into a 3-lb. device. The right shift key is slightly bigger, too, though still no trackpoint pointer (guess I'll keep waiting)."

The European Commission is considering intervening over the failure of UK data watchdogs to punish BT for the way it secretly co-opted tens of thousands of customers into trials of Phorm's profiling system to serve them targeted advertising.

stavros-59 writes: An internal BT report on the BT secret trials of Phorm (aka 121Media) Deep Packet Inspection has been revealed on Wikileaks today. The leaked document shows that during the covert trial a possible 18 million page requests were intercepted and injected with javascript and about 128 thousand charity ads were substituted with the Phorm Ad Network advertizements purchased by advertizers specifically for the covert trial period. Several ISPs are known to be using, or planning to use, DPI as a means of serving advertizing directly through Layer 7 interception at ISP level in the USA and Europe. NebuAd claim they are using DPI to enable their advertizing to reach 10% of USA internet users.
