Comment Weak design + poor RFP vetting (Score 1) 182

3945 is a little overkill but it sounds like the RFP was poorly speced based on a terrible design. Also keep in mind Cisco, despite what they may think, is not a SMB centric vendor but an enterprise solutions provider; nothing is cheap. To Cisco a branch office is a Nike office with ~200 users. Just because you can put all those features into a 4-5U rackbox does not always mean its a good idea. Dual redundant power supplies do nothing for you if the backplane for all those expansion cards or the motherboard dies. Then your entire network is down and you cant even call IT because the same dead router also runs your voip phones. You can still right-size your gear and leave some room to grow. I dont know if Cisco was to blame, there are very few one-box solutions that have those amounts of options. None of them are cheap. This thing was not just a IP router, it looks like it also had extensive telephony and security add-ons which are typically spendy for the hardware then a per user software licence fee. Don't forget about the service contracts per unit that goes into the cost. It sounds like a poor design combined with fail-tastic breuaucracy. Having Verizon as the middle-man knowing the Feds are writing the check is asking to get ripped off. Dont be pissed at Freightliner because some fool bought a fleet of dumptrucks to do pizza delivery.

Apple Support Allowed Hackers Access To User's iCloud Account 266

Robadob writes "Yesterday a hacker gained access to Mat Honan's (An editor at Gizmodo) Apple iCloud account allowing the attacker to reset his iPhone, iPad, and Macbook. The attacker was also able to gain access to Google and Twitter accounts by sending password recovery emails. At the time this was believed to be down to a brute-force attack, however today it has come out that the hacker used social engineering to convince Apple customer support to allow him to bypass the security questions on the account."

At the least in the beginning they should focus on basics only and core fundementals. Careful choices about what to teach first and at what level regardless of subject is important. A few people have mentioned Logic. That is a subject that could be taught from early grade school. "Touching very hot things will harm you. Fire is very hot, therefore touching fire will harm you." I didnt take logic myself but I think you will get the idea. Certain core logic and analytical processes taught at an early age will serve a student well in many disciplines they may study. Also Logic and reasoning skills have become even more essential with the information age. Some kids think ANYTHING on the internet must be correct to some degree. People blame verious media for a wide range of social problems. Children armed with better reasoning skills earlier on could have a better "Bull$hit Filter" to process the vast swarm of information they will recieve throughout thier lives. The hopeful outcome is an education that prepares someone for a lifetime of learning, and the challenges of life in general. Each grade/year would build on gradually more advanced applications. There would come a time where the student would have the chance to specialize, I would say by sometime in high-school. Some people will not grasp certain subjects as well or willingly as others. Forcing someone through excessive amounts of any topic can have negative effects on thier education as a whole. There has to be a definate line where a subject is covered enough for general needs. Computer Sciences should be taught in schools but only to a certain level before the student must choose to specialize that way. This would serve well to get future CS specialists off to a running start, but not everyone will be a CS type of person.

The king of thieves has been robbed? What rubbish! Now M$ in fairness has made some good stuff at times. There are usergroups that would still be left in the cold without M$ projects, I cite Microsoft Robotics Studio. They have driven the industry to move fast even if was under a whip. This is an all time low blow even for them. I do have to applaud thier tactic of using Forbes as the vehicle in its latest fear/smear campaign. Like someone mentioned earlier non tech savy CEOs will be re-made weary of OSS. 'Techies' have thier info sources they trust, and so do the 'suits'. Im a techie and think of Forbes as glossy toilet paper. =) My 'manager' thinks /. is a liberal, hacker-ego-handjob site. So touche' M$ and En Garde! This may hurt you more than Vista. As a sidenote does M$'s pet, Mac, risk any impact of said patents since thier OS is somewhat linux too? I admit im not as savy with OSwhatever as id like to be....I know it looks beter than vista ;)
