Fair enough. Having interfaced with Merkey personally, I'll be the first to admit that he's got some extreme beliefs. Yet, on this topic, the things he told me are consistently borne out by external, objective facts. Jeff told me Jimbo claimed that in return for Y he would do X and, indeed, Jimbo did X. Normally, that would seem a little extreme, but in the wake of the Rachel Marsden situation, it seems rather consistent. Still, I can understand where you're coming from.

Submission + - DonorGate Scandal Latest to Hit Wikipedia (smh.com.au)

MSTCrow5429 writes: In the latest of a long train of scandals to hit Wikipedia, the "Sydney Morning Herald" has accused founder and Wikia President Jimmmy Wales of trading multi-thousand dollar donations for article re-writes. Jeff Merkey, formerly of Novell, claims that Mr. Wales approached him in 2006, and that for a fee, Mr. Wales would personally see to it that the article on Mr. Merkey, which had cast him in a negative light, would be re-written in Mr. Merkey's favor. Mr. Merkey claims that after he donated $5455, Mr. Wales followed through on this quid pro quo. The Wikipedia edit history does indicate that Mr. Wales wiped out the article on Mr. Merkey, and then personally re-wrote it.

Submission + - Jimmy Wales Faces Allegations of Corruption (sfgate.com)

eldavojohn writes: "There are a couple allegations of Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, abusing his power. The article states that several people claim he used the foundation to pay for person a expenses including reimbursement for a $1,300 dinner for four at a Florida steakhouse. Along with that are accusations that he dated and then edited the conservative political columnist and television commentator Rachel Marsden's Wikipedia entry after she was concerned with it and asked him about it. To which Wales replied that "I acted completely consistently with Wikipedia policy. I did the right thing: I passed along my work to date for other editors to deal with, and I recused myself from the case.""
