On one hand, I understand their ham handed approach to national security after 9/11. It was like a fire department flooding a property to make sure the fire was out. People had and will have good justification for ridiculing their blunt instrument approach to airport security -- especially the randomness of it all. On the other hand, we have intelligent people with experience enough to know that x-ray devices and bag searches only give the illusion of security. While on a much smaller scale, look at what the Israeli's do. A very well trained security person looks deeply into your eyes and questions you. That's it. That's all it takes to give the green light or send up a red flag. And, when was the last time you heard about a hijacking in Israel? Screening passengers by observation techniques can't be thwarted, while technological safeguards can always be overcome.

As a Jew and married to an Israeli, I have a lot of firsthand knowledge about flying thru Ben-Gurion airport, and I agree 100% with the comments about Israeli security. Unfortunately, in the US that kind of security is called "profiling", and objected to even though we - rightly or wrongly - profile EVERYONE we come into contact with: it is called "first impression". Personally I think it is fine to profile people as one tool, but NOT OK to use that to discriminate against them.

I am an Internist - and while I think a lot of what we do to patients has not been adequately studied, I resist the urge to regulate everything.... if you want to go down that pathway, then there should be no Men's Health Vitamins, no Immune Boosting supplements, etc. Somewhere in the mix people have to take some individual responsibility.... Patients ask me about various "recommended" treatments, and I tell them there is no evidence to support (or in fact that there is evidence against) their use. I applaud the idea that the FDA regulates devices WE prescribe for patients (or use on them), since it is difficult (if not impossible) for patients - and often doctors - to evaluate the safety/utility of them.

But apps on a mobile device? You can go to a million web sites and be given information that is frankly crap, and it is your choice if you want to believe it unquestioningly. So why not a mobile app? I can see the argument that it should be regulated when a mobile device is used for actual measurement that will influence treatment (such as http://www.americandiabetes.com/living-diabetes/diabetes-supplies-articles/horizon-alternative-glucose-monitoring-methods-under), but otherwise I think we have become way too paternalistic in our approach....

Someone raised HIPPA compliance - that is MY obligation. So do we really need to regulate an app that facilitates communications between doctors covering patients? I am the one in violation if I email protected info using standard email... We don't insist that the email providers show HIPPA compliance. Likewise, if I use a communications app and I did not check to see if it is HIPPA compliant, that should be MY problem - and then the market will insure that those apps fail...

So yet another natural progression of the aging process has become an illness to be cured?!?

So you are going to throw away the ibuprofen you could use for that knee arthritis, allow yourself to become blind and not do that cataract surgery, and (if you are a male) get up to pee every hour at night and not do that prostate surgery. Enjoy your natural aging process!

Yes racism exists, and yes the criminal justice system is weighted against poor and minority populations. But offering these statistics implies that somehow crimes and criminals should be distributed evenly in the population --- and if they aren't, the data proves injustice. Where the hell does that sleight-of-hand come from???
