Comment Incompetence or something sinister? (Score 0) 116

Are the police and relevant authorities confident that this was something that was an internal blunder, and not something more sinister? If this was an accidental issue, the person who committed the blunder should be held to account. While I'm hoping that this is the most likely account and thus most probable, I'm not discounting malice of intent from an insider or terrorist. Either way, this really isn't good.

I'm glad y'all are discussing this, but it's obvious too many don't actually understand the problem. Google's latest Android OS update as well as the new iOS both have "always listening" functionality. They listen for their trigger word, but they're always listening. What's worse is that some of these things have their own Internet connectivity (cellular data) and don't need your permission. Putting them on a "separate guest network" accomplishes next to nothing since it's not only their network presence but physical presence as well you need to worry about. Point being - dismissing as "It's stupid. I don't allow it. People are dumb." reply demonstrates exactly why security folks are marginalized. It's unfortunate, because this is both a technology and psychology/sociology issue Failure to understand that, means you continue to be irrelevant in the "real world" where people can't wait to buy a fridge that keeps track of when their milk will spoil and sends them text-message alerts while simultaneously re-ordering new milk. Thanks for reading.

Comment FaceBook moving into the 'real world' (Score 0) 67

This, my friends, is where FaceBook starts to actually gain value as a business. I know the comments so far have been snarky - and yes many businesses already provide this for 'free' - but if the end-user experience is consistent this could be fantastic. Hell, if you're using 4Square why not? Before you go into the whole privacy rant remember that you're probably leaving more than enough breadcrumbs and digital fingerprints for someone to track you - telling them where you shop or what places you frequent ...may or not be of concern. Personally, I think this is a good thing as it could bring consistency to "free WiFi", and improve the experience for the masses. There, I said it.
