From what I've seen in the overseas news, you might be forgiven for thinking that all of Canberra has burned down. Actually, while it is bad, it's not _that_ bad. Four people have died, 400 homes have been lost and several thousand more people have been evacuated temporarily. But this is a city of 300,000 people, and most of us are fine.
Our home in Watson is about as far as you can get from the huge weekend fires, which were south west while we are north east. We are a bit closer to today's hazards, but not even on alert. We haven't even had any of the power, water & gas problems affecting the southern suburbs.
Life is interesting, of course. We have to conserve water and avoid use of the sewers as far as possible. We have had a rain of ash, and the sky is full of smoke. Hard on eyes, noses and throats. But we are still luckily well out of it.
