Comment Counterargument from an actual AVP owner (Score 5, Interesting) 120

I've had the Vision Pro for a year now, and I still use it several times a week. I use it mostly for pleasure, but I've found ways that it's actually enhanced my workflow as well.

For work, having the ability to have a giant screen connected to my Mac, as well as a 360 degree cascade of other apps open (music, tv, RSS feeds, etc) has been great and it's actually kept me a bit more focused on work. I move the distractions literally behind me so that I have to physically turn around to interact with those apps and windows.

For pleasure it's been great for watching TV and movies both at home and while traveling. At home I use it on the couch with my spouse when we both want to be together but don't necessarily agree on what we want to watch. For travel, seriously, on flights for 3+ hours I've really enjoyed having a private space to watch TV or movies or play games and not have it out in the open for the entire plane to watch.

Are there things I don't like about it? Yes, certainly. It is a little heavy, but I bought a third party forehead rest that better distributes the weight. Was it expensive? Absolutely - but I went in knowing what I was getting: A first generation product that Tim Cook and other Apple executives clearly articulated was not an every day consumer product, but was instead a first generation product for enthusiasts and people interested in AR/VR - with a price point that clearly wasn't targeted at average consumers.

There are definitely people who bought it and didn't enjoy it or didn't really get the value proposition that Apple clearly laid out for this device. But there are a lot of us out here who bought one, use it regularly, and truly enjoy it for what it is - and for what it can be if Apple continues to develop this technology.

If you want me to use an iPhone for work then you can damned well buy it for me and pay the monthly fees. I have an android and have no intention of going anywhere near Apple's walled garden with anything, let alone something as personal as my phone.

If you'd bothered to RTFA you'd see that MS will be paying for the purchase of an iPhone 15 to use for work purposes, and that the employees can continue to use their personal Android phones for everything BUT authentication.

Comment TL;DR if you didn't RTFA (Score 3, Interesting) 44

1. The reason for this change is because MS is trying to improve their entire cybersecurity stance across the board.
2. China blocks the Google Play store, so Android devices cannot download or update MS Authenticator for employee use.
3. Affected employees will be provided - at no cost - an iPhone 15 to use for this purpose.
4. Affected employees may still use their personal Android phones for everything else.

A lot of you need to try to remember that not everyone is a power user, so not everyone roots their devices. People who even know how to root their devices are a super-minority of the entire Android userbase.

Plus it may be against corporate policy to use a rooted device (especially one that's used as an MFA) anyway.

That is wholly and factually incorrect. For at least the last year and a half to two years, Apple has baked in three separate release channels for iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS devices: OS Updates, Security Responses & System Files, and Beta Updates. Several times since then, Apple has released "Security Responses & System Files" updates that were completely separate from standard OS updates. They intentionally created this feature as a response to the original Pegasus attacks.

Comment Re:Then Apple should do the reasonable thing (Score 1) 109

That's literally how it works today. Devices managed by enterprise (JAMF, etc) have permissions set about whether or not they can download apps from the Apple App Store, what stock apps are available for us, always on VPN profiles, etc. It will work exactly the same way for the 3rd party app stores on enterprise-managed iPhones.

Tiny company that uses vulnerabilities in an API to sell their non-essential product vs. the lawyers for one of the most valuable companies in the world... yeah that's going to go great for Beeper. Interoperability is great but Beeper isn't doing anything unique, nor is Apple. There are close to a dozen apps out there that allow text and media asset communications between people and devices - encrypted and otherwise. If Apple doesn't want to open up their ecosystem to this that's on them. This blue bubble vs green bubble nonsense is exactly that: nonsense.

Comment Installing another OS isn't for avg consumers (Score 1) 285

The default argument of the Android community that the solution to device obsolescence is to simply “install a new OS” is not a viable option for the majority of consumers. It's not easy for the average person to swap out their operating system and/or root their device. Yes, there are lots of tutorials but the average consumer:

1. Doesn't even know you can do this.
2. Does not have the technical proficiency to do this.
3. May not realize that by doing this they may not be able to get carrier support for certain technical issues.
4. May not own a PC or Mac that is necessary to do this (a lot of low income Americans don't own computers and their smartphone is their only internet device)
5. Do not buy a phone or device with the intent of supporting it themselves - they expect it to just work.

Hate on Apple all you want, but at least they offer 5+ years of support for all of their devices. Google needs to improve its own level of OS support AND impose a higher level of support on manufacturers.

Slashdot is a community of individuals with a generally higher level of technical capability than the average adult. While the solution for us may be to root & install another OS, it simply is not a viable option for the majority of people, and that’s the problem.
