I had forgotten the details of the space elevator collapse in the Mars trilogy. Thanks for filling them in, Grail! It does look like such a collapse would be rather hard to pull off.
It appears that PL/I (and its dialects) is, or will be, the most widely used higher level language for systems programming. -- J. Sammet
