I'm from the US, so maybe you can help me (and others) understand the situation in Europe. How do people there deal with violent criminals?
Here's my point of view. Let's assume guns were impossible to get. The Columbine "body count" could have been similar if a working homemade bomb was used. Probably not as high if through different things like poison. Also, I really wonder about the effectiveness of blades/knives/homemade spears. If the star wrestler had a knife (and skill with it) I wouldn't stand a chance. At one time I've heard that Japan had poisoning incidents, and a huge increase in violent crime involving teenagers and knives.
My personal viewpoint on the gun control issue in America is that deaths probably would go down if guns were hard to get (The knife violence in Japan isn't really adding up to a ton of murders), but that gun control is pointless because no matter what the US government does, guns will still be easy to get (especially for criminals). We would spend billions of dollars and have nothing to show for it (just like with the drug war).
