Comment V science fiction series (Score 1) 501

This definitely reminds me of the V science fiction series from the 80s. Society looks down on science and scientists, and society puts full faith and trust in the authorities. People are ready to snitch on their neighbors over the slightest bit of suspicion.

The only difference from the series and real life, the enemy isn't an external force; it's us tearing ourselves apart in fear. Meanwhile, the power hungry simply use that fear to gain more power and wealth while everyone else is distracted and takes little notice.

Comment Get free Farmville crap from 7-Eleven (Score 1) 96

I stopped at my local 7-Eleven two nights ago and noticed that some items have small prize stickers on them. Lo and behold, the prize stickers are for items in Facebook games. I don't know what range of games the stickers apply to, but I did receive a prize for Farmville and another prize for Mafia Wars.

I think I'll save these for my nieces and nephews as gifts for Christmas.

Timberwolf (a.k.a. Firefox) Alpha 1 For AmigaOS 152

An anonymous reader writes "We're happy to announce the availability of the first alpha release of Timberwolf, the AmigaOS port of the popular Firefox browser. Timberwolf needs AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2 installed. Please read the documentation for information about usage and limitations. This is an alpha release, meaning it will have a lot of problems still, and be slower than it should be. We are releasing it as a small 'Thank you' to all those that have donated in the past to show that development is still going on. Timberwolf is available on os4depot.net. For further information and feedback, check the Timberwolf support forum on amigans.net."

Woman Creates 3-D Erotic Book For the Blind 113

Lisa J. Murphy has written an erotic book with tactile images for that special visually impaired porn connoisseur in your life. Tactile Mind contains explicit softcore raised images, along with Braille text and photos. From the article: "A photographer with a certificate in Tactile Graphics from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Murphy learned to create touchable images of animals for books for visually impaired children. Then she realized that there was a lack of such books for adults only. 'There are no books of tactile pictures of nudes for adults, at least the last time I looked around,' says Murphy. 'We're breaking new ground. Playboy has [an edition with] Braille wording, but there are no pictures.' She says that while we live in a culture saturated with sexual images, the blind have been 'left out.'"

Submission + - Congress trying for another database

grag writes: CNET News.com reports that the US Congress, in their quest for immigration reform, seek to force employers to utilize a database to determine a person's eligibility for employment. The Department of Homeland Security would operate the database and would be given access to IRS records for this purpose.

The article also mentions similarities between the no-fly list and difficulties the proposed database could pose to valid people seeking employment.
