this is America, if we can have guns and beer why cant we talk on cell phones when we are driving? guns kill more people than cell phones and the only difference is they determine your aptitude with a gun. Why not just have people take a couple aptitude tests to see if they can talk and drive at the same time rather than restricting yet another right of ours?

frist post. honestly if this is the kind of stuff that gets you all riled-up, I think it's time you took a walk. This is possibly the least worrying thing to ever come across slashdot in a while. So a bunch of kids determined that white males shouldn't get funding, well wah. I always hated those people who told me that there are always other people who have it worse than you, but Tropic Thunder was more racist than this. I don't think anyone has to worry about white males being underrepresented. Sure we don't have a NAAWP or the Society of White Engineers or anything, but that comes with the skin color. We had a fairly large stint in global history basically selling and raping anyone else. Now we have to share. The best description of race I've ever heard came from that "racial deliciousness" guy. He said something about the entire world being like an orchestra, and that we can all be different and just as valuable. America lauds it's ability to see past race and treat everyone the same, but any music major'll tell you to never do that with an orchestra (and any guitar player'll tell you to never do that with the singer). At the same time, giving the trombones an easier part than they should have because you think they can't play as well as the other instruments is unacceptable. The truth is that to ignore differences is still racism because due to norms there will still be those that do not get an equal share. You know 70% of black smokers smoke menthol, while only 20% of white smokers do? I think I'm just pulling that out of my ass, but I really like that statistic, and say it as much as possible, even when it makes no sense. What I'm basically saying is this: your life is meaningless and fornicate as much as possible. It's true.

I thought this was exactly what parallel universes are. Just a bunch of universes with different conditions. We didn't really get lucky that we are in a habitable one because we exist, and just by the virtue of our existence means we could not be in anything but a habitable universe. Sure there might be better universes, but at least we're not on Nowwhat. Seriously, none of this is new if you've read Mostly Harmless or Candide.

Fun Things To Do With a Math Or Science Degree? 564

bxwatso writes "My niece just took the ACT and got a perfect score on the math section. 25 years ago, when I took the test, the kids who aced the math section were pretty special. Her score, combined with straight A's so far in high school, suggest to me that she might be able to go to a top university (MIT?) based on her math aptitude. The rub is that she doesn't like math or science, even though she finds them easy. She doesn't want to be an engineer or scientist. I thought the folks here would be a great group to ask: What are some creative, not too nerdy professions that nonetheless require a talent for math, engineering, or science?"

Getting Hired As an Entry-Level Programmer? 540

An anonymous reader writes "I received a state university degree in Computer Science. After graduation, I immediately took jobs in QA to pay the bills while waiting for other opportunities, which of course turned out to be as naive as it sounds. I've been working QA for several years now and my resume does not show the right kind of work experience for programming. On the whole I'm probably no better as a a candidate than a CS graduate fresh out of college. But all of the job postings out in the real world are looking for people with 2-5 years of programming work experience. How do you build up those first 2 years of experience? What kinds of companies hire programmers with no prior experience?"
