On Sunday, US President Doland Trump proposed the state of New Mexico be renamed to "New America". Trump posted a photo of New Mexico with the proposed change to Truth Social, and the photo was subsequently reshared by the official White House account on X.
The image shows the outline of the state with the word "Mexico" crossed out in red and replaced with "America".
Trump has the power to rename geographic landmarks such as bodies of water, but he doesn't have the constitutional ability to legally rename states. New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grishman accused Trump of creating a distraction and insisted "New Mexico's name isn't up for debate".
