After over a month of relentless hacking, genius scotty2 has finally smashed the G2's notorious emmc-read-only-on-boot mechanism, which had been incorrectly characterized in the press as a "rootkit". The hack involves several steps-- first achieving "temp root" through a fork bomb exploit, then running a specially crafted kernel module that power-resets the read-only emmc to bring it up in read-write mode. Finally, the bootloader is re-flashed, which permanently removes the read-only on subsequent boots. The whole process is said to be automated by tomorrow.

As you may recall, the citizens of the US shelled out about $85 billion to bail out AIG and its creditors (Goldman Sachs in particular) last year. But as 80% owners of AIG, we still don't know what happened exactly. That may change. In an NYTimes Op-Ed, former prosecutors (including former NY governor Eliot Spitzer) are calling for the US Treasury to force to AIG release its treasure-trove of emails to the public before allowing AIG to "break free" of our control. As the prosecutors put it, "By putting the evidence online, the government could establish a new form of "open source" investigation. Once the documents are available for everyone to inspect, a thousand journalistic flowers can bloom, as reporters, victims and angry citizens have a chance to piece together the story." Good idea?

Just a heads up... Following a month or so of their Early Access Program, NeoOffice, the free Office suite for OS X has just released their 2.2.1 version. New features include support for the native Mac OS X spellchecker, support for the native Mac OS X address book, support for high resolution printing (more than the 300 dpi limit of previous versions), opening, editing, and saving of most Microsoft Office 2007 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, and the latest features from OpenOffice.org 2.2.1, which is the code base for NeoOffice. X11 not required, but for those of you who actually WANT to use X11, check out the new RetroOffice.
