Google Releases Experimental Phone To Employees 141

alphadogg, as is his wont, sends in a Network World piece on the resurgent rumors of a Google Phone. "Google has handed out a new mobile phone running its Android software to some employees, stirring another wave of speculation that the oft-rumored Google Phone is real. In a blog post on Saturday morning, Google said the phones are being distributed so that workers can experiment with new mobile features. It did not say the device will be a Google-branded phone. Since even before Google unveiled Android, onlookers have wondered whether the search giant will release its own phone. Instead, it released an open source operating system that other hardware vendors can use to make phones."

Malware Could Grab Data From Stock iPhones 127

Ardisson writes "Swiss iPhone developer Nicolas Seriot presented last night a talk on iPhone Privacy in Geneva. He showed how a malicious application could harvest personal data on a non-jailbroken iPhone (PDF) and without using private APIs. It turns out that the email accounts, the keyboard cache content and the WiFi connection logs are fully accessible. The talk puts up several recommendations. There is also a demo project on github."

+1 Actually, Chromium does exactly what was announced... It's an OS based on Chrome, to be used with cloud applications. Instead of "lukewarm", the responses should be "ecstatic" ! Finally an OS which delivers exactly what it tells it would !!!! Only question I ask myself is: "How would one be able to watch a movie easily ?" Granted you can do that with websites but streaming a whole movie can be a pain when your network's not that good.

US Air Force Buying Another 2,200 PS3s 144

bleedingpegasus sends word that the US Air Force will be grabbing up 2,200 new PlayStation 3 consoles for research into supercomputing. They already have a cluster made from 336 of the old-style (non-Slim) consoles, which they've used for a variety of purposes, including "processing multiple radar images into higher resolution composite images (known as synthetic aperture radar image formation), high-def video processing, and 'neuromorphic computing.'" According to the Justification Review Document (DOC), "Once the hardware configuration is implemented, software code will be developed in-house for cluster implementation utilizing a Linux-based operating software."

Based on the current beta of Chromium, the ads WOULD be really targeted since you login with a gmail account. Meaning even "just" using a spreadsheet in google docs would be done with your gmail/google account... Unless of course you create a bogus gmail/google account for this specific computer. In which case you'd loose a good deal of interest in the bargain. Sorry for the lame english, I'm french (yep, we're still alive and kickin' !). Also, first post for me on /. Very happy to join you guys ! V
