Comment Re:Safety in case of a fire? (Score 1) 233

I have read reports about Tesla spontaneously catching fire, just like other cars. Here is one news article: https://www.thedrive.com/news/...

So I personally would not base the safety of a tunnel mainly on the expectation of cars passing through it not catching on fire, as it is driven by a human and additionally by far the most technologically complex part involved.

Does anyone know details about the safety of these tunnels? I only found some vague answers in an old FAQ: https://web.archive.org/web/20...

I have not found any details on the number of emergency exits or the distances between them. Based on the FAQ answer they seem to believe that they can handle a burning care mainly with the ventilation system. Given that even Tesla auto-mobiles occasionally burn (as any other car) and the small diameter of the tunnel, such an event will lead to enormous heat and substantial amounts of smoke in the tunnel. Intervention will most likely be quite difficult, given the limited diameter of the tunnel for fire trucks, seemingly missing fire hydrants and long intervention distances in general.

Given my knowledge about fires in tunnels I have a bad feeling about this (but maybe there are additional safety measures taken that I did not read about).

Just for comparison: In Switzerland newly constructed road tunnels (railroad tunnels have different regulations) need emergency exits every 300m (~33 yards / 0.185 miles).

As illustration a video of e vehicle on fire in a Norwegian tunnel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
I suppose it's obvious how a smaller tunnel diameter will pose additional challenges in responding to a fire. Especially regarding that a fire-truck cannot overtake vehicles and therefore vehicles behind the burning car will hinder intervention (given that ventilation will hopefully be in the direction of travel (as vehicles ahead of the burning car can still drive on and are less endangered) and the fire department will also want to attack the fire coming from the safe side, meaning with ventilation and not against it).
