OK, assuming we cast away all those arguments (which are quite good really), the answer is because it is a major extension of the law.
It's because it depends largely on their definition of 'illegal'. There are two types of 'illegal' in Australia -
Illegal to possess which I think covers only child porn plus maybe terrorist training videos.
There is also Illegal to distribute, which covers anything rated higher than R in most states. This would block a lot of stuff, which despite being technically illegal, is available in almost any video store.
To my mind the second, and most important argument is this: I choose what content to view on the internet. The only person affected by me viewing the content is me. It is the very definition of a victimless crime. The government should stop repressing us and stop real crimes.
