Thought I'd jump in here.
University Jobs are like any other job (except the immediate pay tends to be less, but the benefits are usually better). I worked for a Major Midwest University Medical Center for many years. The IT dept. was an absolute mess. Mediocrity rose to the top and those who did not kiss ass in the development world were headed for a bumpy ride. Admin rarely knew what the hell they were doing and almost never asked the SME's.
Now I'm at a major Pacific NW university, and it's another world. We have defined project plans administered by people who actually know what the hell they are talking about, and most importantly, the people who actually do the work are included in the planning! So, my point is this. When accepting any job, if your going for more than a paycheck, try to get a read on the environment and culture of the organization, in the end, that is what really matters.
