Your car could simulate thousands of potential outcomes in a split second and pick the one in which the least damage is caused, e.g. glancing off another vehicle or other object to lose momentum without damaging the occupants. These vehicles should also communicate with each other, factors such as mass, current speed, whether they too are braking and so on.
