Before grog, sailors were given a daily ration of alcohol(rum?). But often times the sailors hoarded their rations and partied real hard at the end of the week. In addition to preventing scurvy, grog also becomes rancid after a few days preventing their sailors from downing large quanitities of booze at one sitting.
