Submission + - The "Everyone gets the source code, Donations get you binaries" Software Model. (lunduke.com)

TroysBucket writes: One developer who is trying to fund his development work via donations has taken on an "Everyone gets the source code, Donations get you binaries" business model, where he provides installers and binaries directly only to donating users. Anyone seen this work well before with other projects?

*cough* Google's App Inventer was never able to really build true applications anyway (the apps can't be submitted to the Android Marketplace and distributed in any way). Plus, there are better alternatives (available right now) for teaching development and easy app creation for Android, iOS, web and plenty more... True, developing for iOS still requires a financial investment. That said... Illumination Software Creator -does- allow someone to build an Android app. Then, when they feel like it'll be financially rewarding to them, hit a button and have a full XCode project auto-magically generated and ready to build. Same goes for Python/GTK apps and Flash web apps. (And, soon, HTML5, WP7 and WebOS).

This is one of many reasons why tools like Illumination Software Creator are so important. If you have a high level language (in that case a fully visual one) that generates native code for any given platform (Java + Android API for Android apps, etc.) then whenever a company decides to sue someone for using an API/Language/etc it becomes easy to jump to another platform (or another api/language on the same platform) from the same project files.

Finger slipped and hit the submit button before the description was added. Doesn't look like I can edit the post either. Bummer! Well... here's the text I would have put in. :) ==== Illumination Software Creator 2.0 was announced today (and set to ship later this month) adding full support for building Adobe Flex and AIR applications (in addition to the current Python/GTK build options) from the same project files. Illumination projects are building using building blocks in a flow-chart-like way. Also announced is a native Mac version of Illumination (already available for Linux and Windows).

Submission + - HTML5 vs. Flash: The Case for Flash (infoworld.com) 4

snydeq writes: "InfoWorld's Peter Wayner offers 7 reasons why Web designers will remain loyal to Flash for rich Web content, despite 'seductive' new capabilities offered by HTML5. Sure, HTML5 aims to duplicate many of the features that were once the sole province of plug-ins (local disk storage, video display, better rendering, algorithmic drawing, and more) and has high-profile backers in Google and Apple, but as Wayner sees it, this fight is more about designers than it is about technocrats and programmers. And from its sub-pixel resolution, to its developer tools, to its 'write once, play everywhere' functionality, Flash has too much going for it to fall by the wayside. 'The real battle is in the hearts and eyes of the artists who are paid to create incredibly beautiful objects in the span of just a few hours. The designers will make the final determination. As long as Flash and its cousins Flex and Shockwave remain the simplest tools for producing drop-dead gorgeous Websites, they'll keep their place on the Internet.'"

Submission + - Asus eReader/Writer Tablet Hands-On Demo (hothardware.com)

MojoKid writes: "Mobile computing is definitely making its mark at Computex 2010 with tablet PCs and eReaders of all sorts coming out for the first time as rivals to Apple's iPad. After announcing their Eee Pad tablet PC, Asus offered some hands-on time with their new e-Reader/e-Writer designed for students and mobile business professionals. The little slate's features include 10 hour battery life, 2450 dpi resolution touch screen, pen writing and input controls, 2MP camera, USB port, and a MicroSD slot. In addition, Asus also has strong ties with Amazon, so it wouldn't be a reach to see some sort of partnership between Asus and Amazon with the Kindle book store as a content provider."

My mistake. I got that information from an article on CNN that seems to have been incorrect and updated as more information has come out. It appears they were not heavily armed, merely knives and pipes, etc.

And there are videos appearing already that show individuals on board going nuts and attacking the soldiers.

The question was, on its face, ridiculous.

It's the military. Even if there were adequate video surveillance (which there isn't always) the military and government would need to approve it prior to release. And, even if both the military and government 100% agrees that it should be released, that process will not be instantaneous. Meetings will be had. Internal reviews will take place (to ensure not proprietary information that should not be released to the public, such as technologies, strategies, armaments, etc is accidentally released via the video).

Also to tow a ship that does not want to be towed is incredibly difficult. Especially when they are shooting at you and you attempt to tie a rope to their ship.

Your comment smacks of someone who wants, very much, to blame a specific party regardless of facts.
