Journal Trolling4Dollars's Journal: I'm not "neo" anything because I don't need to be 10

I'm going into blowhard mode (TM) here so bear with me. I find it kind of comical that some conservatives feel the need to differentiate their brand of conservative from the "bad" old fashioned conservative. The so-called "neo-conservatives" (or 'neocons' for short). I suppose the idea that they have a new approach to conservative ideals is supposed to make people feel more comfortable with them, or something. Well... what I say is that if you've got a good thing going, there isn't much need to change it. That's why I am proud to be a liberal. No "neo" needed here because a timeless and classic idea rarely needs updating. That is all. Oh... I'm feeling tired... (a wag of the stump to Twirlip)

Note to the AC who was apparently frustrated by my last journal entry: Comments will be enabled on the previous entry when I get around to it. Could be a few days. Could be a few weeks. Could even be a few months. This is largely because I am VERY uninterested in politics. However, some other people here on Slashdot seem to take them WAY to seriously. Personally, I think it's the sign of a mental problem. ;P

That's still kinda confusing, because classically liberals were more like what we call Libertarians these days. The definition has changed drastically recently to be someone who generally advocates more federal government interference for the sake of the environment, and more federal and state government social programs.

The classic liberals were strongly against a powerful federal government, and in favor of decentralization of government power as much as possible, returning it to local levels where feasi
    • I did say that I'm not big on politics. Sadly the same thing goes for history too. Mostly I am concerned with the here and now. But, if what you say is accurate, then what I said is silly. But... a part of me wouldn't have it any other way. :)

AFAICT, this redefinition of `liberal' is a purely American phenomenon. I don't know enough about recent American political history to say exactly how this happened, b

  • the only thing that changes politically anymore is that more and more people move towards the status of "moderate" yet elect leaders who invoke elements of fascism.
    • That's an EXTREMELY good point and I'm glad you bring it up. I've often noticed that humans as a whole seem to have this odd disparity where they profess to want freedom and individuality and yet act otherwise. A very mild example: the appeal of "gated communities" which put a lot of restrictions on the residents (house must be the same color, lawn must look a certain way, interior can only have certain colors, etc...). I'll bet if you ask most people living there if they believe that freedom and individ

      • I finally got around to posting response 1 to your journal. It's probably going to be hate-provoking, but if you care to read it it is in my journal as it's own topic.

I realize you prefer not to debate politics, and certainly tried not to slam your view (I falied miserably on one thing, but you will know when you see it). I did try to point one thing out at the end that you might even agree with. We'll see, eh?

On the gated communities...maybe I can shed some light. I think the reason people view this
  • I love the way you think. Glad you gave that fuckwad a a swift kick in the mouth. We need more people like you in the world. =)
  • Two reasons you might be a neoconservative:

    1. if you were a liberal who switched to conservativism because you were disgusted by the left's embrace of the Soviet Union. This also includes people who have always been conservative, but sympathize with liberals on some social issues.

    2. To distinguish yourself from paleocons like Justin Raimondo (antiwar.com), Pat Buchanan, or any of those KKK type assholes who make conservatives look bad. (And sorry, Buchanan's thinly veiled hatred of Hispanics and Raimondo'

You should pop over to GMontag's "journal" [slashdot.org] sometime, give him the old what for. He and Trollip seem to be buds.
