Ask Slashdot: What's a Good Tool To Detect Corrupted Files? 247

Volanin writes "Currently I use a triple boot system on my Macbook, including MacOS Lion, Windows 7, and Ubuntu Precise (on which I spend the great majority of my time). To share files between these systems, I have created a huge HFS+ home partition (the MacOS native format, which can also be read in Linux, and in Windows with Paragon HFS). But last week, while working on Ubuntu, my battery ran out and the computer suddenly powered off. When I powered it on again, the filesystem integrity was OK (after a scandisk by MacOS), but a lot of my files' contents were silently corrupted (and my last backup was from August...). Mostly, these files are JPGs, MP3s, and MPG/MOV videos, with a few PDFs scattered around. I want to get rid of the corrupted files, since they waste space uselessly, but the only way I have to check for corruption is opening them up one by one. Is there a good set of tools to verify the integrity by filetype, so I can detect (and delete) my bad files?"

That is for me a hint of humility from Ballmer, which is a first... Look at all apple Apple product that failed in the past and the way they've turned it into a success today, ipad is just a Newton turned into what it is now. Somebody tells Microsoft to get their R&D to switch the R to Release, because they have a few winning products too.

PlayStation Network Expanding To Involve Other Devices 63

At CES, Sony's Kaz Hirai confirmed that the company will build out its PlayStation Network for use with other devices, such as televisions, Blu-ray players, and PCs. Quoting: "... the expansion starts next month with the availability of the PSN video store on these other devices, and Hirai explained they are constructing a mechanism to create a single user ID across the entire network (if you have a PSN account, it's good to go on any other applicable Sony device, and if you create one on another device, it'll work on PSN). And finally, Hirai also announced the formation of a new Sony division — called Sony Network Entertainment, Inc. — to drive this expansion of the PSN service into a Sony-wide network."

Comment war & economy (Score 1) 2369

Isn't war part of the US economy ? The US became the first economic worldwide power thanks to war in the first place... What would be the other reason why they'd go to war so systematically ? Nobody will be able to convince me : "You cannot impose democracy" even when you use it as a pretext to something else (petrol anyone ?).
