Roguelikes: the Misnamed Genre 201

ZorbaTHut writes "I've been playing a lot of Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup lately. It's a great example of a roguelike (and open source, too). But I can't stop thinking that perhaps 'roguelike' is the wrong term for the genre. 'Roguelikes aren’t about dungeons. They’re not about text-based graphics, or random artifacts, or permadeath. ... Roguelikes are about using an unpredictable toolkit with complex interactions in order to overcome unpredictable challenges.'"

Artificial Synapse Created For Synthetic Brain 129

Zothecula writes "It's probably still going to be a while before autonomous, self-aware androids are wandering amongst us. That scenario has come a little closer to reality, however, with researchers from the University of Southern California having created a functioning synapse circuit using carbon nanotubes. Huffington Post Fights Back Against NY Times Paywall 57

As you may recall, we've recently the New York Times' stumbling efforts to implement a paywall on their website. Now in an effort to combat the growing trend of hiding content behind annoying attempts at monetization, the Huffington Post has taken a strong stand against the paywall by setting up a paywall of their own that blocks out NY Times . "On HuffingtonPost.com you can view the first 6 letters of each word at no charge (including slideshows of adorable kittens). After 6 letters, we will ask you to become a digital . You may choose to subscribe to see the rest of each word individually, or choose a package to access all words of more than 6 letters." expect this to be a particularly devastating response, given how much of the HuffPo's content is appropriated and re-used by the NY Times.

You know it's an electrical pump don't you? Keeps running just fine when the engine is off.

Another thing, you have perfect control over when the engine shuts down, you need to be in neutral and release the clutch before the engine shuts down, simply pressing the clutch again starts it up (faster then you can put it in first gear)

New Hungarian Government OMGs All Gov Sites 59

An anonymous reader writes "The new Hungarian government chose to replace the home pages with a 'disclaimer' page on several governmental websites such as ministries or the Foreign Office. The title and the main message is 'OMG,' which is followed by an explanation that the inherited websites 'lack any kind of uniform structure' and this is 'unworthy of Hungary.' Today is the takeover day in most ministries for the new administration."
