But is a company responsible for the actions of software claiming to represent it?

IANAL either but I see two logical cases here:

1. The company has in some way granted that software to act as the copyright owner, at which point they are responsible for the claims it makes (up to a point possibly - there may be some exemption for evident malfunctions)

2. The system does not have the authority to file DMCA claims, making it not responsible for any bad claims by rendering all and any claims invalid.

UK Gov't Spending Details Now Online 56

krou writes "The UK government has released a treasure trove of public spending data in an effort to lift what Prime Minister David Cameron calls the government's 'cloak of secrecy.' 'The first two tranches of data are from 2008/09 and 2009/10. The Combined Online Information System (Coins) includes what departments were authorised to spend, what they actually spent and what they are forecast to spend in future.' Since the government admits that 'some degree of technical competence' will be needed to use the files, they have asked the Open Knowledge Foundation to help make it 'more accessible,' and have also promised 'more accessible formats' by August. The datasets can be downloaded from data.gov.uk." And on a similarly happy note, reader mccalli writes "Bletchley Park's archive is to be digitised and put online. It seems HP made an offer to help out with scanners and expertise, and the result is that these texts will be made available to all."

Submission + - Facebook's "Evil Interfaces"

An anonymous reader writes: Tim Jones over at the EFF's Deep Links Blog just posted an
interesting article on the widespread use of deceptive interface techniques
on the web. He began by polling his Twitter and Facebook audience for
an appropriate term for this condition and received responses like "Bait-and-Click" and "Zuckerpunched,"
ultimately he chose "Evil Interfaces" from Greg Conti's HOPE talk on malicious interface design
and follow-up interview with media-savvy puppet Weena. Tim then goes on to dissect Facebook (with pictures).
So what evil interfaces have you encountered on (or off) the web?

Singh had angered the chiropractors' trade group with his published claim that certain chiropractice treatments were "bogus."

As expected, the MacBook and MacBook Air both feature Core 2 Duo processors, as does the 13. The 15 and 17 models come with a choice of i5 or i7. Memory is 4GB across the board, with an optional upgrade. Additionally, the new line may include three different types of screen options: Glossy, High Resolution Glossy, and High Resolution Glossy with Anti-Glare. A second person familiar with the matter adds that at least some models will support 512GB of Solid State Drive (Flash) storage."
