The article is just missing one minor detail: Most aircraft operators have already migrated away from floppy disks for loading data to, and retrieving data from, aircraft. Those systems were replaced long ago. Replacements for the old floppy disk based Airborne Data Loader (ADL) for Boeing aircraft, and Multipurpose Disk Drive Unit (MDDU) for Airbus aircraft have been available for roughly two decades now. There might be a few holdouts, sure, but they are few and far between.

I've also been using Insteon for about 15 years. When a plug in Insteon hub product failed about 10 years ago, and the replacements looked to be cloud connected, I used a Beagleboard and a PLM to roll my own controller. Nothing fancy, but it works. I was very leery of connecting my appliances to some cloud, somewhere, that does something with the data it collects. And I didn't want my devices to stop working, or work bizarrely, because of some code change elsewhere.. outside my control and knowledge. Other posters have ranted far more eloquently about this on a variety of topics.
Hardware however, as you say, that's a problem. The switches and dimmers fail from time to time and need replacement. In the Insteon case they fail far more often than I think they should (though not enough to keep the company going I guess). Ah well. Unfortunately, I have one that just started acting up last week - I guess I'll be trying to fix it instead of replacing it.
So that we don't all have to change out all these components, hopefully somebody buys the IP and finds a way to continue to sell replacement parts in a sustainable business model.
