As I am working as Project Manager on Software Development... My background is not technician. However, personally, I think you have to understand what is project management and what is different between project management and do activities as project manager. Different people have different charectors to perform... If you are programmer is not mean that you can not perform Project management but in turn, you may not perform as good as you could do compare with programming or other project manager. As the real case, my programmers used to think that they could be Project Manager because they know well technical but when they tried, I gave them a chance to manage projects, they realize that project management is not as easy as they think. Becasue skill that they have do not support on PM Activities,
Interpersonal and understanding someone requirement. However, I suggest that Project Managers have to understand programmer and other stakeholder nature also technical issues to control and manage project to achieve to successful. For technicians, Software project management has been fail for more 80%, but this number is not come from only mistake on Project management but all of us have to understand that all parties, who involve on project has to take responsibility... Which mean if anyone still bias or doubt in the others, project will not reach to success for sure.
