SCO v. Novell Goes To the Jury 67

Excelcia writes "Closing arguments in the six and a bit year old slander of title case between SCO and Novell occurred today and the case is finally in the hands of the jury. It's been an interesting case, with SCO alternately claiming that the copyrights to UNIX did get transferred to them, and that the copyrights should have been transferred to them. 'Judge Ted Stewart said, after the jury left to begin to deliberate, that in all his years on the bench, he's never seen such fine lawyering as in this case.' We're not going to find out the results until at least Tuesday, however, as one juror is taking a long weekend. Great lawyering notwithstanding, we can all hope next week that the Energizer bunny of all spurious lawsuits will finally go away."

I understand your point about reducing animal suffering, but the picture you paint in regards to "horrific factory farms" is not quite on the money. Well at least from my experience. I live on acreage and have a small farm - we have our own chooks (chickens for those not used to Australian slang) and grow goats for meat. Our neighbors (larger properties in the range of 5000 - 20000 acres) are growing beef, lamb and running dairies. Basically It is not in the farmers interest to have his animals suffer as this leads to reduced productivity eg weight gain per day, reduced milk output or reduced or weakened wool clip. Abusing your stock directly effects your businesses bottom line and the quality of your produce and therefore most farmers i know want their animals to be as happy and healthy in the paddock as possible and not have to pump them full of antibiotics or growth accelerators. Just my two cents.

Have a small goat farm myself, goats are better browsers than grazers and tend to excel at clearning properties of weeds - Blackberry and that. Wouldnt use them for mowing though - always eat the stuff you dont want them to eat. To be honest goats are bastards with the fences either jumping over or pushing under - sheep in my experience are a easier.

iPhone Gaming Continues To Grow 131

1Up reports that the popularity of gaming on smartphones is growing, particularly on the iPhone. In fact, gaming on portable devices is growing even at home, where users presumably have access to more powerful platforms. CNN points out that the developer for Trism, one of the first popular games, has raked in over $250,000 in profits through the App Store. Apple exec Bob Borchers and various game developers recently discussed the future of games on the iPhone. "Patrick Gunn, director of marketing for EA Mobile, showcased Need for Speed Undercover, which will be available next month. Gunn says that EA has 'taken full advantage of all of the unique elements ... like touch, flick, accelerometer, and motion sensitivity' — and graphically, the game appears to be roughly on par with a PSP title."

Space Litter To Hit Earth Tomorrow 443

A refrigerator-sized tank of toxic ammonia, tossed from the international space station last year, is expected to hit earth tomorrow afternoon or evening. The 1,400-pound object was deliberately jettisoned — by hand — from the ISS's robot arm in July 2007. Since the time of re-entry is uncertain, so is the location. "NASA expects up to 15 pieces of the tank to survive the searing hot temperatures of re-entry, ranging in size from about 1.4 ounces (40 grams) to nearly 40 pounds (17.5 kilograms). ... [T]he largest pieces could slam into the Earth's surface at about 100 mph (161 kph). ...'If anybody found a piece of anything on the ground Monday morning, I would hope they wouldn't get too close to it,' [a NASA spokesman] said."
