New Wii Menu Update Targets Homebrew Again 258

Nintendo has tried to block homebrew during firmware updates in the past, often unsuccessfully. Now, as it rolls out version 4.3 of the Wii System Menu, stopping homebrew modifications once again seems to be its primary goal. From Nintendo's support site: "Because unauthorized channels or firmware may impair game play or the Wii console, updating to Wii Menu version 4.3 will check for and automatically remove such unauthorized files." Since it's hard to bill that as an upgrade, they vaguely add, "In addition, there are some behind the scenes enhancements that do not affect any prominently-used features or menus but will improve system performance."

Thanks to them, for three weekends in a row we get to watch player-controlled spaceships fight it out for accolades and unique in-game items available only to the first, second, and third place winners. Genre Wars — the Downside of the RPG Takeover 248

Phaethon360 writes "From Bioshock and Modern Warfare 2 to even Team Fortress 2, RPG elements are creeping into game genres that we never imagined they would. This change for the most part has managed to subtly improve upon genres that needed new life, but there's a cost that hasn't been tallied by the majority of game developers. 'The simple act of removing mod tools, along with the much discussed dedicated server issue, has made [MW2] a bit of a joke among competitive players. Gone are the days of "promod," and the only option you have is to play it their way. If Infinity Ward are so insistent on improving the variety of our experiences, they don’t have to do it at the expense of the experience that many of us already love. It really is that simple. If they don’t want to provide a good "back to basics experience," they could at least continue to provide the tools that allow us to do that for ourselves.'"

IDEs With VIM Text Editing Capability? 193

An anonymous reader writes "I am currently looking to move from text editing with vim to a full fledged IDE with gdb integration, integrated command line, etc. Extending VIM with these capabilities is a mortal sin, so I am looking for a linux based GUI IDE. I do not want to give up the efficient text editing capabilities of VIM though. How do I have my cake and eat it too?"

Comment Core2 Duo Mobile is an option (Score 1) 697

I'm currently running an MSI Fuzzy GM965 board with an intel core 2 mobile (T8300) in a Sugo SG05 chassis. 4 gigs or RAM and 1 x TB 3.5 WD Green drive gives a total Wattage of 35 idle. A little over what you wanted but it idles at 1200MHz and scales to 2400 when required. This is in the process of replacing my old server that pulls 230Watts constantly (Opteron 246 with 2GB RAM) so likewise I'm hoping to save a decent ammount on my electricity bill. My only gripe with the system is that the bios in the MSI is shocking, try and run an external graphics card in the system and the bios does not let you turn off the internal one. You then get to play the "which graphics source gets detected first" game as that then becomes the default. I've ended up just sticking to the internal which is fine for a server purpose but rules this out as a desktop replacement anytime soon.
