Maybe you should read a bit more before running off at the mouth.
1) The US is a Republic, go look it up. We directly elect local, state, and federal representatives. The actual representation is on the order of 25% (that number being rather high, I can't find the link that picks this apart) when you get to bare metal.
2) Bowling for Columbine was *not* in any way shape or form a documentary. Numerous sites have eviscerated that charlatan for his loaded agenda and outright lies. Before you start pointing at Hollywood movies and saying "that's America" make sure you know your source.
3) Yes, America has been arrogant. For good reasons and very bad ones. We have forgiven more debts to world countries than most of the EU's GDP (possibly more).
What we have been doing, poorly I might add, is cleaning up for the messes that we have made for the last 50 years (basically post-Truman era). Nixon put off the exact conflict that Clinton and Bush, Jr have been dealing with. He said that we couldn't at that time wage war against the Islamic Fundamentalists. Right now, by conservative estimates, there are 13 million of said extremists spread out over the Middle East and Indonesia.
You said that it is because of the way we overthrew the governments. We installed Hussein to be unoverthrowable. He took to CIA training really well. He has been on MI6, SAS, CIA, and Mossad hit lists for years, to no avail.
So far the worst loss of civilian life in your recent history (since the 1990s is history now)was the Kosovo bombings (somewhere in the neighborhood of 5- 6000 civilians died in short order, with no forward progress militarily).
I am not attacking you, but your and many other's ignorance of fact. There is a very real power struggle going on between the US and the rest of the world. The US does not want to lose its identity in the coming globalization. The EU members have already given that up, whether they realize it or not. China and Russia are also, in their own way, making the same stand. They use the UN like the US does, when it is convenient.
I really haven't read enough of Russian history and Chinese history to know how they will ultimately react, but the US people are so fiercely independent, that it will be a cold day in hell before we chose, out of free will, to give up the national identity to become one of the collective.
