Submission + - Police: Mac Tech Installed Spyware To Photo Women (computerworld.com)

CWmike writes: "He was hired to fix their computers, but police say that Trevor Harwell instead installed spyware software that took candid photos of his clients in various states of undress. Harwell had been a Macintosh specialist with a Los Angeles-area home computer repair company called Rezitech. That's how he allegedly had the opportunity to install the spy software, called Camcapture, on computers. While working on repair assignments, the 20-year-old technician secretly set up a complex system that could notify him whenever it was ready to snap a shot using the computer's webcam, according to Sergeant Andrew Goodrich, a spokesman with the Fullerton Police Department in California. 'It would let his server know that the victim's machine was on. The server would then notify his smartphone... and then the images were recorded on his home computer,' he said. Police say they've found thousands of images on Harwell's computers and have identified dozens of victims, all of them women in Los Angeles and Orange County. Harwell was arrested Wednesday by Fullerton police."

Since being made redundant, most of my income comes from running a virtual business in Second Life. I log in at home and then teleport up to my building platform or showroom. So next time you're looking for a comedy Cowboy Neal option, you might want to consider us virtual workers first, you insensitive clods!

There's always the option of uninstalling 'default' apps. Admittedly in previous versions of Ubuntu when I've done this I've had to ignore the dire warning regarding k/x/ubuntu-desktop but if you read the small print you'll know they're just meta-packages and your entire desktop won't really go *bang* if you get rid of Firefox.

Not ideal for Granny User, but she won't be uninstalling things anyway. If you're the kind of user that worries about what's installed by default then you should be reading the small print and/or know what you're doing in the first place. That said, they may have made the small print a bit larger since I last tried it so it might not be an issue anymore.
It's funny. Laugh.

Fahlman who says he was the first to use three keystrokes :-). It's sad that emotional icons, known as emoticons have replaced clear writing to communicate. Soon, we'll all go back to cave paintings (but they will be digital and in high resolution).

The inventor said "But it's always possible that someone else had the same idea — it's a simple and obvious idea, after all.", but at least he didn't try to patent the concept as one would do now."
