Journal Tet's Journal: Superbowl 3

I haven't watched any American football in about 15 years. But the Superbowl was on last night as I was going to bed, so I thought I'd watch it for a bit. Bleurgh! Since I last watched.it, the style of television coverage has changed. The main camera was too far back, so although you got a reasonable overview of each play, there simply wasn't enough detail to see clearly what was happening. I ended up needing the countless replays (there were always replays, but now it's just completely gratuitous) just to see what was going on. Then there's the nightmare that is American television in general. Dumbed down television for Joe Redneck is not what I want to be watching. Also, maybe it works, but carpet bombing advertising is a sure way to piss off a lot of people, and I'm at the top of that list. So, Reebok and Coors, by trying to infiltrate my brain every other minute, your advertising dollars have convinced me to actively try and avoid your products in future. Not that I'm a great consumer of them anyway...

I think my biggest disappointment, though, was that it was a very dull game. Perhaps it picked up later, but I got bored and switched off shortly after the Eagles' first touchdown.

  • Many sporting event broadcasts (all network broadcast games) are being recorded and transmitted in high definition and the camera work is starting to reflect that. With the extra resolution, the cameras don't need to zoom in to the action at hand to see the ball and the players numbers. This is especially nice in hockey, rugby and football. You can take in the whole play instead of just the throw/pass and the catch. Unfortunately, for us poor SOBs without HDTVs, you can't see sh*t.
