No, I don't expect most of you to have heard of any of those
bands, though anyone into anything vaguely metallic would be
well advised to check out a few of the bands listed. But
that's not the point[1]. It was a great success. She liked all but the Dimmu Borgir
track, which in retrospect was because I choce the wrong one.
Had I put on "Perfection or vanity" or "Metal heart" (even
though neither are particularly representative tracks for
them), then I'm sure I'd have had a 100% hit rate. But anyway,
I digress.
No, what's strange about this is the choice of tracks I'm
having to do. While talking to her the other day, it transpired
that she's completely ignorant of the classics. I mean
completely ignorant. She's heard the names Judas
Priest and AC/DC, but has no idea what they sound like. She
only discovered W.A.S.P. and Iron Maiden last month. Now fair
enough, she's a fair bit younger than me, and is a product of
her time -- she thinks Kurt Cobain is the greatest songwriter
to ever walk the earth. Sad, but true. But to be so totally
unaware of anything that came before? I don't get it. So I'm
currently compiling a list of classic '80s metal to burn to
CD for her. Any suggestions? So far I've got:
- AC/DC - "Highway to hell"
- AC/DC - "Back in black"
- Judas Priest - "Breaking the law"
- Judas Priest - "The sentinel"
- Warlock - "All we are"
- Manowar - "Sign of the hammer"
- Cinderella - "Night songs"
- Megadeth - "Peace sells"
- Kiss - "Crazy, crazy nights"
- Metallica - "Creeping death"
- Whitesnake - "Here I go again"
- Queensrÿche - "The needle lies"
- Helloween - "I want out"
- Ozzy Osbourne - "Shot in the dark"
- Def Leppard - "Pour some sugar on me"
- Dio - "Don't talk to strangers"
- Scorpions - "Coming home"
- Scorpions - "Still loving you"
- White Lion - "Lights and thunder"
- Rainbow - "Kill the king"
- Rainbow - "All night long"
- Dokken - "Unchain the night"
- M.S.G. - "Save yourself"
- Yngwie J. Malmsteen - "You don't remember, I'll never forget"
- Van Halen - "Hot for teacher"
- Mötley Crüe - "Red hot"
It's not necessarily a selection of the best tracks that each band has done. More just a representative snapshot of what I was listening to in the mid to late '80s. So what else should go on there? Anything obvious that I've missed? I've deliberately avoided most of the NWOBHM output, as it's a bit raw, and she prefers something a bit more polished.
[1] Yes, massive bonus points for anyone that does recognise more than a couple of bands from the list.

Anyways, WHY just 80s metal? I mean, c'mon, "Crazy, Crazy Nights" is absolutely disposable. However "Detroit Rock City" is a far better song, out right, in all senses of the word.
Additionally, throwing on some "killers" era Maiden (infact, "Killers" would be my suggestion, perhaps also "running free") and Bon Scott era AC/DC is an M-U-S-T MUST MUST MUST (dirty deeds, jail break, etc.). Even the 70's era Priest is better (well, British Steel is

Queensrÿche's good, though personally I prefer Spreading the Disease or Eyes of a Stranger from Operation: Mindcrime myself.
Metallica: For Whom the Bell Tolls, Sanitarium or Seek and Destroy are some of my faves. I think the plainly obvious choice is One, though.
Judas Priest: My fave was always Turbo Lover, though in hindsight that song is rather ghey. (Then again, so are they.)
I second the motion on Def Leppard. I think Pyromania was overall a better album than Hysteria,

Well done that man. I'd completely forgotten about that, mostly because I'm not keen on AJFA as an album. That track's the exception to the rule, though, and I think I'll probably go with it.
I'm sensing that my Leppard choice isn't a popular one. I might have to go with something from "Pyromania" instead. "Rock of ages" isn't a bad suggestion

Sorry, I don't do the whole Torrent thing. Open up a hole in my firewall to let random strangers in to grab data from my disk? Nope, I'm way too paranoid about security for that. I hear that loud and clear. Once every player can just take a CD full of MP3s, it'll be a different world in terms of making mix cd's for people. Shoot, I just made an MP3 cd for Sielwolf (his car player plays mp3s) an
