Comment Cats already out of the bag (Score 1) 107

ElevenLabs might be able to block 4chan users from using their particular voice generator but the cat's already out of the bag. There are open source voice generators like tortoise-tts that create output that's just as good as what ElevenLabs puts out and anybody with a reasonably decent GPU or even just a google colab account can feed about a minute's worth of a celebrity's voice into it and generate a surprisingly realistic copy. I used just five 10-second clips of Joe Rogan and was able to produce this output for an AI related podcast. I'd expect more shenanigans from 4Chan regardless of what any particular AI focused company does with trying to block abuse.

My favorite 3rd grade teacher blew my 3rd grader mind when she pointed out that if you wrote N/S/W/E on a circle like a compass the horizontal spells the word "we". Sounds silly but for some reason even though North and South were easy to remember I would constantly flip west and east in my head.

I won't lie, I used to think that it was mostly women who had an awful sense of direction because every time they would ask me how to get someplace I'd tell them to go south/north/west/east and they'd be completely confused, apparently having no idea which way was which (even though they've lived here for years). Turns out that it's just that since females are more likely to ask people for directions it's easier to find out that they have no sense of direction, because the one time a male asked for directions he was equally clueless.

Nonsense, H.264 is more than capable of storing full-length movies on a dual-layer DVD at 720P with very good quality. If you don't believe me go find a hardcore movie pirate who pirates HD movies (or just check a public bittorrent tracker and look at the file sizes), most 720P movies will fit on a DVD. 1080P movies would be pushing it on longer movies, but even then 90 minute movies would easily fit on one disc and look fantastic. If movie pirates can encode it so that it doesn't have significant artifacting and can fit onto a regular DVD, I have no doubt that Toshiba would be able to pull it off. As an example, the 1080P pirate of Casino Royale is a little over 12GB, but that's a 150 minute long movie. Now I'm not saying that it'll be videophile level video, but it'd be competitive in terms of quality with the downloadable HD movies available nowadays on iTunes and Xbox Live, and if people are willing to buy those maybe a cheap physical disc format that doesn't require downloading for hours and hours would actually work.
