One simple reason why Linux would lose to NT in the specific configuration Mindcraft wants to use is that the AMI MegaRAID does suck under Linux, even with the 1.0 driver. Using only the on-board Ultra2 SCSI port of the DELL machine for all the disks and configuring the system for software RAID5 under Linux would likely at least double disk performance.
